(<\/em><em>There is a good reason people say that \u201cApril-liar is fickle because it changes the weather seven times per day\u201d.<\/em><em>) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few trickster paronyms, one pair for each letter of the month, <strong>\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043b\u044c:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u0410 \u2014 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0438 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There are a few things that can be <strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0440\u043d\u044b\u043c\u0438<\/strong>, but for the most part this adjective is reserved for political discussions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u043c<\/strong> &#8211; authoritarian regime<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e <\/strong>&#8211; authoritarian country<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0410\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (reputable or highly regarded) is used mostly when talking about people or sources, as in <strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<\/strong> (highly regarded surgeon) or <strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043d\u0438\u043a <\/strong>(reputable source). While both have to do with clothing, <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043e\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (with an \u2018\u043e\u2019) means \u2018to dress up in a showy kind of way\u2019 and <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means \u2018to undress somebody\u2019. That one letter difference may lead to an awkward communication gaffe. While <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> means &#8216;flying&#8217;, as in <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0430\u043f\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0442<\/strong> (an aircraft), <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> means &#8216;lethal&#8217; and is common in phrases like <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0438\u0441\u0445\u043e\u0301\u0434 <\/strong>(a lethal outcome) or <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043b\u0443\u0301\u0447\u0430\u0439 <\/strong>(a lethal incident).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u042c \u2014 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0438 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (pronounced the same)<\/h4>\n<p>Since there aren\u2019t words that begin with \u043c\u044f\u0433\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u043a \u00ab\u042c\u00bb (soft sign), I chose this pair for two reasons: first and foremost, the words differ because <strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d<\/strong><strong>\u044c<\/strong><strong>\u0435<\/strong> has <strong>\u043c\u044f\u0433\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043a<\/strong><strong> (soft sign)<\/strong> while <strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d<\/strong><strong>\u0438<\/strong><strong>\u0435<\/strong> has the letter \u201c<strong>\u0438<\/strong>\u201d in its place. Second of all, orthodox Easter is coming up (May 2<sup>nd<\/sup> this year) and I thought it would be great to talk about the significance of those paronyms for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>The basic rule is this: <strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c\u0435<\/strong> means \u2018Sunday\u2019 and it\u2019s spelled with <strong>\u042c<\/strong> and <strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> means \u2018resurrection\u2019 and is spelled with <strong>\u0418<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of Easter, you might hear the following greetings:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u0421<\/em><em>\u043e \u0421\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043b\u044b\u043c \u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0301\u0432\u044b\u043c \u0412\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435\u043c!<\/em> [So Sv\u0435\u0301tlym Khrist\u043e\u0301vym Voskres\u0435\u0301niyem!]<\/p>\n<p>OR <em>C\u043e \u0421\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043b\u044b\u043c \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c\u0435\u043c! <\/em>[So Sv\u0435\u0301tlym voskres\u0435\u0301niyem!]<\/p>\n<p>While there are many Easter blogs that I could reference here, I\u2019ll leave <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/christ-is-risen\/\">this one<\/a> up because it shows how that <strong>\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0445\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (Easter greeting) is used on a poster outside of a church in Yekaterinburg.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, our older blogs are proof that paronyms <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%d0%bf%d0%b0%d1%80%d0%be%d0%bd%d0%b8%d0%bc%d1%8b-frequently-confused-words-in-russian\/\">are fun to talk about<\/a> and our readers have previously shared <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/same-same-but-different-iv-paronyms\/\">creative mnemonic devices<\/a> to differentiate between some of them.
