My family doesn&#8217;t celebrate Orthodox Easter but we cherish the traditions around it. And every year since first grade my best friend&#8217;s grandma would give me <strong>\u043a\u0443\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u0430\u0441\u0445\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u044f\u0439\u0446\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0445\u0443<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kulich\">kulich<\/a> and Easter eggs for Paskha.) Also, it\u2019s common to use \u2018\u043c\u044b \u0441 \u0442\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0439\u2019 to mean \u2018you and I\u2019 in Russian even though \u2018\u043c\u044b\u2019 means \u2018we\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u041a\u0430\u043a \u043c\u044b \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0438\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u0430\u0441\u0445\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u044f\u0439\u0446\u0430 \u0441 \u043d\u0430\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u043c\u0438 \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u043c\u0438 (<\/strong><strong>How we dyed Easter eggs<\/strong> <strong>with natural dyes<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are so many <strong>\u0437\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0445<\/strong> (wonderful) and <strong>\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0301\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0445<\/strong> (creative) <a href=\"https:\/\/sekreti-domovodstva.ru\/kak-pokrasit-yajca-na-pasxu-svoimi-rukami.html#h\">tutorials<\/a> on how to make your Easter eggs very festive <strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f<\/strong> <strong>\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0445\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/strong> <strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/strong>\u00a0(for the Easter table). Our first attempt at dying eggs was with turmeric (<strong>\u043a\u0443\u0440\u043a\u0443\u043c\u0430\u0301<\/strong>) and the result was this beautiful warm golden color.<\/p>\n<p>We did make <strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0440 \u0438\u0437 \u043a\u0443\u0440\u043a\u0443\u043c\u044b<\/strong> (turmeric mixture) and <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043e\u043b<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438<\/strong> <strong>\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/strong> (put salt in it) to prevent the eggs from cracking, but we didn\u2019t boil the eggs separately and just cooked them in the turmeric water for 10 min. We saw some leftover <strong>\u043a\u0430\u0440\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong>\u00a0(hibiscus tea) in the teapot and used that mixture to dye a few more eggs. But, unlike the recipe, we only had about 20-30 grams of tea, so our mixture wasn\u2019t as concentrated as the original recipe (80 grams). However, after being boiled for 10 minutes, the eggs turned this subtle grey color. <strong>\u041a\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0438<\/strong> (by the way), we polished both batches with some vegetable oil to add a nice shine for the photos.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Red Cabbage<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_14193\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14193\" class=\"wp-image-14193 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/1-350x341.jpg\" alt=\"red cabbage eggs\" width=\"350\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/1-350x341.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/1.jpg 719w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">eggs dyed in red cabbage by author<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We had the most fun dying eggs with red cabbage (<strong>\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0447\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f<\/strong> <strong>\u043a\u0430\u043f\u0443\u0301\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/strong>) since each eggs turned out differently even though the original <strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0440<\/strong> (the cabbage and water mixture) looked very purple (<strong>\u0444\u0438\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong>). So, depending on the amount of wine vinegar we added to each jar, the eggs turned from a lovely soft blue color (<strong>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0433\u043e<\/strong> <strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442\u0430<\/strong>) to a mate lilac-grey (<strong>\u043c\u0430\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u043b\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043e-\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0440\u044b\u0439<\/strong>). The darkest grey one was from another leftover hibiscus tea but this time with added wine vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>There is one popular method we haven\u2019t tried yet and that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DI5ztJX0COQ\">dying Easter eggs with \u043b\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u0448\u0435\u043b\u0443\u0445\u043e\u0439 (onion peels)<\/a>. It gives the eggs a very pleasant deep reddish-brown hue, but the caveat is the amount of onion peels (dry outer layer) that has to be saved in advance. Most recipes recommend red and yellow peels from 10-15 large onions and some even suggest to start saving them from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%d0%bc%d0%b0%d1%81%d0%bb%d0%b5%d0%bd%d0%b8%d1%86%d0%b0-a-farewell-to-winter\/\"><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong><\/a> (Maslenitsa). We didn\u2019t have a special paskha-mold to give the dessert the shape of a truncated pyramid that\u2019s said to be a symbol of the Tomb of Christ.
