However, this was where my knowledge ended. Therefore, I began to search for information about why in Russia, May 1<span lang=\"en-US\">st<\/span> is still &#8220;<span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0434\u0430\u0440\u044f&#8221; (<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a holiday, literally <\/span>&#8220;<span lang=\"en-US\">a <\/span>red day of the calendar&#8221;<span lang=\"en-US\">).<\/span><br \/>\nFirst of all, I found out the root cause <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">) <\/span>of the appearance of such a holiday. To do this, of course, I started by reading the Wikipedia pages. Then there were rallies <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0438) <\/span>in the United States and Canada and spread throughout the world. In Russia, this day was first celebrated in 1890. And already in 1897, the holiday acquired a political <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439) <\/span>connotation <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u043e\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, May Day was a symbol <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0441\u0438\u043c\u0432\u043e\u043b) <\/span>of revolution <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044e\u0446\u0438\u044f)<\/span> and class <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430\u044f) <\/span>struggle <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0431\u043e\u0440\u044c\u0431\u0430)<\/span>. Gradually, this day became one of the main public holidays. The biggest celebration was traditionally <span lang=\"en-US\">held o<\/span>n Red Square <span lang=\"en-US\">(\u041a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u0430\u044f<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> \u043f\u043b\u043e\u0449\u0430\u0434<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u044c)<\/span>. Undoubtedly, this was accompanied by numerous demonstrations <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0434\u0435\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u0438) <\/span>with slogans <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0430\u043d\u044b)<\/span> and portraits of politicians <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Soviet Union is in the past, but Russians continue to celebrate Labor Day for some reason. <span lang=\"en-US\">Today<\/span>, <span lang=\"en-US\">it has lost its<\/span> political <span lang=\"en-US\">meaning (\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435)<\/span>. It <span lang=\"en-US\">i<\/span>s funny that people now just <span lang=\"en-US\">feast<\/span> the &#8220;May holidays&#8221; <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043c\u0430\u044f\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438) <\/span>by combining May 1st and May 9th <span lang=\"en-US\">(Victory Day \u2014<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"> \u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c \u041f\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044b<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span>. Officials proposed the extra days to avoid COVID-19 widespread in the first week of May.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in Russia this year, there are officially 10 paid <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u043e\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0447\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0439)<\/span> days off in May. It seems strange that you do not know <span lang=\"en-US\">much about <\/span>why you have the right to rest <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445) <\/span> for a whole third of a month. <span lang=\"ru-RU\">Eventually<\/span>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/infographics\/9033\">TASS website<\/a>, Russians in 2021 have 122 days off, excluding weekends <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(\u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Russians mostly<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/may-in-russia-celebrate-study-and-plan-for-summer\/\"> like May a lot<\/a>. Finally, it is getting warm outside, flowers are blooming, puddles on the roads are drying up (read about Russian roads <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/two-main-russian-problems-fools-and-roads\/\">HERE<\/a>), and bonfires <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b) <\/span>smell all around (in fact, most likely from the burning of those last year leaves and not from cooking delicious shashlyki).<\/p>\n<p>Even though I am not in Russia, I will also rest on the first and ninth of May &#8211; they will be on the weekend.
