The holiday may also be known as May Day (\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u0430\u044f)<\/span> or<\/span> International Worker’s Day<\/a> (\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0434\u0430\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434\u044f\u0449\u0438\u0445\u0441\u044f)<\/span> in other countries<\/span>. <\/span>Over 80 countries celebrate it as well<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact the holiday has a rich history, most of today’s youth in Russia know nothing about it<\/span>. From time to time<\/span>, Russian media <\/span>correspondents conduct a survey of citizens on the streets about this day<\/span>. The results show that all respondents remember its name – “Labor Day.” At the same time, people in the age category under 30 years old basically can no longer add anything by shrugging their shoulders.<\/p>\n

I personally remembered something about the eight-hour (<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439<\/span>)<\/span> workday (\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0447\u0438\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c)<\/span> and cleaning (\u0443\u0431\u043e\u0440\u043a\u0430)<\/span> the area from old leaves around my house. However, this was where my knowledge ended. Therefore, I began to search for information about why in Russia, May 1st<\/span> is still “\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0434\u0430\u0440\u044f” (<\/span>a holiday, literally <\/span>“a <\/span>red day of the calendar”).<\/span>
\nFirst of all, I found out the root cause (<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span>) <\/span>of the appearance of such a holiday. To do this, of course, I started by reading the Wikipedia pages. Then I found t<\/a>his interesting <\/span><\/a>Yelena’s blog<\/a>, and I<\/span> highly recommend reading it.<\/p>\n

So the<\/span> Labor Day’s roots went back to Australia in 1856. Then there were rallies (<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0438) <\/span>in the United States and Canada and spread throughout the world. In Russia, this day was first celebrated in 1890. And already in 1897, the holiday acquired a political (\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439) <\/span>connotation (\u043e\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

For a long time, May Day was a symbol (\u0441\u0438\u043c\u0432\u043e\u043b) <\/span>of revolution (\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044e\u0446\u0438\u044f)<\/span> and class (\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430\u044f) <\/span>struggle (\u0431\u043e\u0440\u044c\u0431\u0430)<\/span>. Gradually, this day became one of the main public holidays. The biggest celebration was traditionally held o<\/span>n Red Square (\u041a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d<\/span>\u0430\u044f<\/span> \u043f\u043b\u043e\u0449\u0430\u0434<\/span>\u044c)<\/span>. Undoubtedly, this was accompanied by numerous demonstrations (\u0434\u0435\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u0438) <\/span>with slogans (\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0430\u043d\u044b)<\/span> and portraits of politicians (\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The Soviet Union is in the past, but Russians continue to celebrate Labor Day for some reason. Today<\/span>, it has lost its<\/span> political meaning (\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435)<\/span>. It i<\/span>s funny that people now just feast<\/span> the “May holidays” (<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u044f\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438) <\/span>by combining May 1st and May 9th (Victory Day \u2014<\/span> \u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c \u041f\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044b<\/span>)<\/span>. Traditionally,<\/span> they go outdoors or to city parks and have some shashlyki<\/span> (<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u0448\u043b\u044b\u043a\u0438, a barbecue-like dish<\/span>)<\/span>. Last week<\/span>, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced (\u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0432\u0438\u043b) <\/span>that 4-7 May would be decreed days off (\u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438) in addition to Spring and Labor Day and Victory Day<\/span>. Officials proposed the extra days to avoid COVID-19 widespread in the first week of May.<\/p>\n

Thus, in Russia this year, there are officially 10 paid (\u043e\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0447\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0439)<\/span> days off in May. It seems strange that you do not know much about <\/span>why you have the right to rest (<\/span>\u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445) <\/span> for a whole third of a month. Eventually<\/span>, according to the TASS website<\/a>, Russians in 2021 have 122 days off, excluding weekends (\u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Russians mostly like May a lot<\/a>. Finally, it is getting warm outside, flowers are blooming, puddles on the roads are drying up (read about Russian roads HERE<\/a>), and bonfires (<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b) <\/span>smell all around (in fact, most likely from the burning of those last year leaves and not from cooking delicious shashlyki).<\/p>\n

Even though I am not in Russia, I will also rest on the first and ninth of May – they will be on the weekend. Out of habit, I’ll clean my patio, make a traditional Olivier salad, and watch some old Soviet movies.<\/p>\n
