Originally, I had a \u0420\u0430\u0434\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (Radonitsa) blog for today and if I had to write about visas, this is the type of embassy-themed<\/a> blog I would rather be writing right now, but alas.<\/p>\n

Russia and US relations like to frequent major headlines and while it\u2019s not a surprise that the two got caught in the spotlight again, the latest news seems to have caused a lot of panic, and rightfully so.<\/p>\n

Articles like this one \u201cU.S. Suspends Visa Services at Consulate in Russia: Ambassador\u201d<\/a> started flooding social media and news channels in both English<\/a> and Russian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From what I understand, the US embassies in Russia will stop issuing all nonimmigrant visas to Russian citizens with the exception of a few diplomatic kind. The US<\/a>\u00a0justifies this as a direct response to Russia\u2019s promise to publish a list of \u201cunfriendly countries\u201d (\u0441\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0441\u043e\u043a \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043d<\/strong>). <\/strong>The list (supposedly) has the United States in the first place.<\/p>\n

You might be asking yourself \u201cWhat in the world is a \u2018list of unfriendly countries?\u201d First of all, welcome to the club. Second of all, according to this article<\/a>, the list will first and foremost serve as a basis for any potential \u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043a\u0446\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (sanctions) as well as prohibit embassies and consulates of these \u2018unfriendly countries\u2019 to hire Russian citizens. The US wasn\u2019t the only one that expressed its discontent about the issue. The yet unpublished list has also received backlash from the EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What now?<\/h4>\n

As someone who has dealt with and relied on all my travel to and living in the US (as a Kazakhstani citizen, but nonetheless) through nonimmigrant visas, it\u2019s absolutely terrifying to even imagine hearing that your plans are hanging upside down and completely enveloped by uncertainty.<\/p>\n

What happens to the Russian students who either just enrolled in an American university of their dreams or should hear back from the admissions office this summer? What of the families relying on tourist visas to see their loved ones living in the US? It seems as if the global pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions weren\u2019t enough of an obstacle and now this.<\/p>\n

All in all, the situation leaves a lot of questions for those seeking \u043d\u0435\u0438\u043c\u043c\u0438\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0432\u0438\u0301\u0437\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(nonimmigrant visas). And I\u2019ll remind you that earlier this year the US closed two of its consulates in Russia:<\/a> one in Vladivostok and another in Yekaterinburg.<\/p>\n

The most recent news sprung a response from a number of commercial visa-processing agencies that are offering alternative routes for students applying for visas this year.<\/a> They are saying Russian citizens can apply through embassies in Israel, Poland, and the UK.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s go back to the Russian words for \u201cunfriendly\u201d for a second.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Aside from wanting to understand how this top-level political decision affects regular people, I kept rereading the name \u201c<\/strong>\u0441\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0441\u043e\u043a \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043d<\/strong>\u201d and its subsequent translation in the Western media as \u201cthe list of unfriendly countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

I actually read the headlines in English first, so when trying to translate the word \u201cunfriendly\u201d in my head I immediately went to the Russian word \u201c\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043b\u044e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

So, what exactly is the difference between \u201c\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043b\u044e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u201d \u0438 \u201c\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u201d?<\/p>\n

The short answer is \u2018\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u2019 is more formal than \u2018\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043b\u044e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

According to Wiktionary, \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043b\u044e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> comes from \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043b\u044e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> and means \u201c\u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f\u0437\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e \u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439, \u043d\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0436\u0435\u043b<\/a>\u0430\u0301<\/a>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e, \u0432\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0431\u043d\u043e \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0441\u044f\u0301\u0449\u0438\u0439\u0441\u044f \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443-\u043b\u0438\u0431\u043e\u201d<\/a> (someone who is unfavorable and inhospitable towards someone).<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (from \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>) means \u201c\u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0301\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0436\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u043c, \u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f\u0437\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u043c \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435\u043c (\u043e\u0431\u044b\u0447\u043d\u043e \u043a \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433\u043e\u0301\u043c\u0443 \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443)\u201d<\/a> [Translation: characterized by an inhospitable and unfavorable attitude, usually towards another country].<\/p>\n

Also, you might have heard the latter one in a phrase \u201c\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u0433\u043e\u0301\u043d\u044c<\/a>\u201d (a friendly fire).<\/p>\n

So, it now at least makes linguistic sense why the Russian list refers to the countries as \u201c\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0436\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n
