It was Russian <i>sledding<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0430\u043d\u044f\u0445<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">) <\/span>that became the <span lang=\"en-US\">original <\/span>idea for roller coasters.<\/p>\n<p>It is known that Russians have always loved sledding.<\/p>\n<p>The 17th-century <span lang=\"en-US\"><i>ice <\/i><\/span><i>slides<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u043b\u0435\u0434\u044f\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u043a\u0438<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span> were 70-80 in height with a 50-degree inclination. In the 18th century, they became very popular in St. Petersburg. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_the_Great\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter the Great<\/a> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u041f\u0451\u0442\u0440 \u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0439 &#8211; <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a <\/span>Russian emperor<span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catherine_the_Great\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">Catherine the Great<\/a> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u0415\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0430 \u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0430\u044f &#8211; <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a Russian <\/span>empress<span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span> arranged for themselves the extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six_Flags\">Six Flags<\/a> of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the popularity of roller coasters spread to other countries. There, Europeans modernized them with tracks vehicles. Finally, the first such attraction was built in Paris in 1804. Therefore, there is a chance that the Russians have nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, &#8220;Russian roulette&#8221; is sometimes also called &#8220;<i>hussar roulette<\/i>&#8221; <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><i>\u0433\u0443\u0441\u0430\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0443\u043b\u0435\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/i><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I assume that you know the rules of this extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/expand-your-vocabulary-verbs-with-prefixes-\u0438\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>gam<\/i><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/expand-your-vocabulary-verbs-with-prefixes-\u0438\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>e<\/i><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0438\u0433\u0440\u0430<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">).<\/span> In simple words, this is a bet with a possible <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/how-do-you-say-to-die-in-russian\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>lethal outcome<\/i><\/a> <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0438\u0441\u0445\u043e\u0434<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>One (sometimes more) round loads to a <i>revolver <\/i><span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0432\u0435\u0440<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span>, leaving some chambers empty. Then the cylinder is spun so that no one knows where the <i>bullets<\/i> <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u043f\u0443\u043b\u0438<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span> can be. Actually, there are two variants of the game &#8211; with the spin of the reel after each move and without it. After that, the players take turns and place the gun against their temple. In the end, they <i>pull the trigger<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0441\u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043a\u0443\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>I read that some people still play with life this way. Probably, the best thing about it is that Russian <span lang=\"en-US\">R<\/span>oulette obeys the general laws of probability theory.<\/p>\n<p>Surely, due to the level of adrenaline, you can often <span lang=\"en-US\">meet<\/span> Russian Roulette in <i>thrillers<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u043b\u043b\u0435\u0440\u044b<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">) and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>computer games<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u044c\u044e\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0438\u0433\u0440\u044b<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, Russian literature of the last century did not have anything about Russian Roulette. Unexpectedly, this term was first used by Georges Surdez (Swiss writer) in 1937. An American newspaper published his story that told how Russian <i>officers<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u043e\u0444\u0438\u0446\u0435\u0440\u044b<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">) <\/span>played this game in 1917.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, today the phrase &#8220;Russian Roulette&#8221; is more often used in a figurative sense. It is not hard to guess that this means <i>courage<\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0445\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span>, bordering on <i>recklessness <\/i><span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0431\u0435\u0437\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0443\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span>.
