In my last blog<\/a> I left a little exercise on prefixes for you. Today, I will give you the answers and dive into what each word means and how the prefix \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> or \u043f\u0440\u0438<\/strong> changed its original meaning.<\/p>\n

\u0412\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means to turn, to spin, or to rotate.<\/p>\n

\u0417\u0435\u043c\u043b\u044f\u0301 \u0432\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430\u0301\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0432\u043e\u043a\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0433 \u0441\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043d\u0446\u04301<\/a><\/sup>The Earth goes around the sun<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Here, the prefix \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> (from <\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0435<\/strong>)<\/strong> adds that meaning of \u201cover\u201d. Imagine your favorite fictional character spinning around Cinderella-style. In fact, any cool metamorphosis revolves around the hero physically turning, whether it\u2019s in a chair in front of a mirror or flying and with sparkles like Sailor Moon. However you want to spin it, the correct spelling is \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b\u0301\u0442\u044c \u2013 to open slightly.<\/h4>\n

\u041e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> \u2013 to open. Prefix \u043f\u0440\u0438<\/strong> indicates that the action is not complete. Easy-peasy, right? Sometimes I wish all grammar was this straightforward.<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/h4>\n

Derived from the verb \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and closely related to but different from \u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>. This pair of verbs probably deserves a blog of their own. In short though, \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and \u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> both can mean to urge something or someone to move faster or to drive a vehicle really fast. \u041f\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, therefore, means to bring a car over really quick. I also stumbled across another popular use of this verb in the context of going through the process of buying a car from a foreign country, dealing with all the paperwork of getting the car back to your country and then driving it back to where you live. And yes, \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and \u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> both appear in rude colloquial phrases like \u041d\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0301!<\/strong>2<\/a><\/sup>Cut the cr*p!<\/span> or \u0425\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0448 \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c!<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>Enough B.S.!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/h4>\n

\u041a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>, which today we know as \u2018red\u2019 used to mean \u2018beautiful\u2019 and somehow this derivative kept the original meaning of the word. The prefix \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> here means \u201cvery\u201d, so \u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c<\/strong> would be \u2018a very beautiful day\u2019. If you want to say that something is \u2018too red\u2019 you would say \u201c\u0441\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0448\u043a\u043e\u043c \u0438\u0301\u043b\u0438 \u043e\u0301\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u2013 arrival.<\/h4>\n

\u041b\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is to fly. \u041f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is to arrive (or literally to fly in).<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c \u2013 to transform.<\/h4>\n

You have likely seen this verb with other prefixes before: \u0438\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>4<\/a><\/sup>to depict or to show<\/span> and \u0432\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>5<\/a><\/sup>to imagine<\/span>. What word is at the very core of all three? \u041e\u0301\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437<\/strong>6<\/a><\/sup>image<\/span>. Again, I feel like this word and its derivatives deserve a full blog of their own.<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0301\u043f\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/h4>\n

This one is also super fun from the etymological perspective. Can you guess the root? Yes, \u201c\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f<\/strong>\u201d is from the word \u201c\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u201d meaning \u2018to step\u2019. Therefore, \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0301\u043f\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> is someone who is stepping over the line of the law. \u0420\u0443\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b\u0301\u043a \u0442\u0430\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0439 \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0432\u044b\u0439, \u043d\u0435 \u0442\u0430\u043a \u043b\u0438?<\/strong>7<\/a><\/sup>Russian language is so beautiful, isn\u2019t it?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0446\u0435\u0301\u043f \u2013 an attachment or a trailer.<\/h4>\n

\u041f\u0440\u0438\u0446\u0435\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is to attach or to hook, a close relative of the word \u0446\u0435\u0301\u043f\u044c<\/strong> 8<\/a><\/sup>a link or a chain<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0448\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c \u2013 to sew on.<\/h4>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u2013 interception or stopping of something<\/h4>\n

For example: \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043c\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0445 \u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f\u0301\u0434\u043a\u043e\u0432<\/strong>9<\/a><\/sup>riot control<\/span><\/p>\n

A rather formal word but the prefix \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> can be substituted with \u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0435<\/strong> to check the spelling.<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u2013 someone who betrays.<\/h4>\n

Once again, the prefix \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> has the meaning of \u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0435<\/strong> and grants the verb \u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>10<\/a><\/sup>to give<\/span> a new meaning: to give something over to another person. \u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is a verb that\u2019s commonly used in Russian, e.g. \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0439 \u0435\u043c\u0443\u0301 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442<\/strong> \u2013 tell him I say \u2018hi\u2019 or literally \u201cgive him my greetings\u201d. \u041f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, however is just used to mean \u201cto betray\u201d because you are literally turning someone or some sensitive information over to someone else. The suffix \u2018\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong> in \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> makes it a noun that refers to a person, similarly to \u2018\u0443\u0447\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u201911<\/a><\/sup>teacher<\/span>, \u2018\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u201912<\/a><\/sup>entrepreneur<\/span>, and \u2018\u043e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u201913<\/a><\/sup>founder<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u0421\u043a\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is a verb that, depending on the context, can mean anything from jumping to skipping and from racing to riding a horse. \u041b\u043e\u0448\u0430\u0434\u044c \u0441\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0442<\/strong> \u2013 the horse is galloping, \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0301\u043a \u0441\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0442 \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u043e\u0301\u0448\u0430\u0434\u0438<\/strong> \u2013 the man on a horse is riding. Colloquially it can even mean \u201cto move from one place to another in chaotic manner\u201d and is used to talk about things that change too much or too often.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043a\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, as with many other verbs of motion, the prefix \u043f\u0440\u0438<\/strong> makes the verb show that someone is approaching a place in a manner of either skipping, jumping, or riding a horse. In everyday speech, you can also use \u201c\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043a\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u201d as a joking (sometimes even mocking) way of saying that someone arrived. Think \u201cprince in shining armor\u201d but ironically.<\/p>\n
