Imagine your favorite fictional character spinning around Cinderella-style. In fact, any cool metamorphosis revolves around the hero physically turning, whether it\u2019s in a chair in front of a mirror or flying and with sparkles like Sailor Moon. However you want to spin it, the correct spelling is <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b\u0301\u0442\u044c \u2013 to open slightly.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u041e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> \u2013 to open. Prefix <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438<\/strong> indicates that the action is not complete. Easy-peasy, right? Sometimes I wish all grammar was this straightforward.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/h4>\n<p>Derived from the verb <strong>\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and closely related to but different from <strong>\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>. This pair of verbs probably deserves a blog of their own. In short though, <strong>\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and <strong>\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> both can mean to urge something or someone to move faster or to drive a vehicle really fast. <strong>\u041f\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, therefore, means to bring a car over really quick. I also stumbled across another popular use of this verb in the context of going through the process of buying a car from a foreign country, dealing with all the paperwork of getting the car back to your country and then driving it back to where you live. And yes, <strong>\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and <strong>\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> both appear in rude colloquial phrases like <strong>\u041d\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0301!<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Cut the cr*p!<\/span> or <strong>\u0425\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0448 \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c!<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Enough B.S.!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u041a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>, which today we know as \u2018red\u2019 used to mean \u2018beautiful\u2019 and somehow this derivative kept the original meaning of the word. The prefix <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> here means \u201cvery\u201d, so <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c<\/strong> would be \u2018a very beautiful day\u2019. Again, I feel like this word and its derivatives deserve a full blog of their own.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0301\u043f\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/h4>\n<p>This one is also super fun from the etymological perspective. Can you guess the root? Yes, \u201c<strong>\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f<\/strong>\u201d is from the word \u201c<strong>\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u201d meaning \u2018to step\u2019. Therefore, <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0301\u043f\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> is someone who is stepping over the line of the law. <strong>\u0420\u0443\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b\u0301\u043a \u0442\u0430\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0439 \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0432\u044b\u0439, \u043d\u0435 \u0442\u0430\u043a \u043b\u0438?<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">Russian language is so beautiful, isn\u2019t it?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0446\u0435\u0301\u043f \u2013 an attachment or a trailer.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u0440\u0438\u0446\u0435\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is to attach or to hook, a close relative of the word <strong>\u0446\u0435\u0301\u043f\u044c<\/strong> <sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">a link or a chain<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0448\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c \u2013 to sew on.<\/h4>\n<p>I covered this one in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/pretty-in-prefix\/\">previous blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u2013 interception or stopping of something<\/h4>\n<p>For example: <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043c\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0445 \u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f\u0301\u0434\u043a\u043e\u0432<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">riot control<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A rather formal word but the prefix <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> can be substituted with <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0435<\/strong> to check the spelling.<\/p>\n<h4>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u2013 someone who betrays.<\/h4>\n<p>Once again, the prefix <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/strong> has the meaning of <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0435<\/strong> and grants the verb <strong>\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_14597-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">to give<\/span> a new meaning: to give something over to another person. <strong>\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is a verb that\u2019s commonly used in Russian, e.g. <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0439 \u0435\u043c\u0443\u0301 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442<\/strong> \u2013 tell him I say \u2018hi\u2019 or literally \u201cgive him my greetings\u201d. <strong>\u041f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, however is just used to mean \u201cto betray\u201d because you are literally turning someone or some sensitive information over to someone else.
