Used with the <strong>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0436<\/strong> [genitive case] we get a piece of something \u2013 <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043b\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430<\/strong>, <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0442\u0430<\/strong>, <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u044f\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0430<\/strong>, <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0446\u044b<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We also see this root in the word <strong>\u0432\u043a\u0443\u0441<\/strong> [taste, flavor] and <strong>\u0432\u043a\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> [tasty, delicious] and even (somewhat disguised) in <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0448\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [to eat].<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0417\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/strong><strong>\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/strong> \u2013 this usually refers to either a part of a larger meal (something akin to an appetizer or a side dish) or a \u201cchaser\u201d for vodka in the form of <strong>\u0447\u0451\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043b\u0435\u0431<\/strong> [black bread], <strong>\u043e\u0433\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0447\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> [pickles], or <strong>\u0441\u0435\u043b\u0451\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/strong> [herring]. Maybe if you drank a little too much and you\u2019re acting a little crazy, someone will tell you <strong>\u0417\u0430\u043a\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> <strong>\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e! <\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0437\u044f\u0301 <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0442\u043e\u0449\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a!<\/strong> [You should eat something! You shouldn\u2019t drink on an empty stomach!] The prefix <strong>\u0437\u0430<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 is reflected in the liquid version of \u201cto chase\u201d \u2013 <strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0443<\/strong><strong>\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441<\/strong> \u2013 a light snack between meals. As you can see, it has the prefix <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435-<\/strong>, which, in this case, suggests a transition, an idea that finds parity in a common English phrase\u2014to having a snack \u201cto hold you over.\u201d Bota wrote an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/pretty-in-prefix-part-ii\/\">article<\/a> about this prefix not too long ago, along with examples of its usage. <strong>\u0417\u0430\u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430 \u2013 <\/strong><strong>\u044d\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e, <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0434\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0436\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0443\u0441\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [A hole-in-the-wall eatery is a place where you can grab a snack.]<\/p>\n<p>But what can you expect to snack on in Russia? <strong>\u0427\u0430\u0439<\/strong> is very rarely taken alone, so there are a number of sweet snacks that you can have <strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u044e<\/strong> [with tea], including <strong>\u0448\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434<\/strong>, <strong>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/strong>, <strong>\u043f\u0438\u0440\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0435<\/strong>. Teatime snack time can turn into a full-fledged mid-day dessert, complete with <strong>\u043a\u0435\u043a\u0441<\/strong>, <strong>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/strong>, or the more modern American imports <strong>\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0443\u043d\u0438<\/strong> or <strong>\u043c\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0444\u0438\u043d\u044b<\/strong>, especially if it\u2019s somebody\u2019s birthday. For a savory snack, you can have some <strong>\u0441\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/strong> \u2013 dry bread ring things, usually draped over a \u0441\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0440 in every picture of Russian teatime you can find.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer months, expect to snack on <strong>\u0430\u0440\u0431\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0437<\/strong> or any other <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0449\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0442\u044b<\/strong> from the <strong>\u0434\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/strong>. <strong>\u041a <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0443<\/strong> [with beer], the most appropriate snack would be <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/strong> [fried pieces of bread], <strong>\u0441\u0443\u0445\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> [croutons]. But my favorite, of course, is to stop by one of the numerous kiosks, usually located in the city center or near the <strong>\u0432\u043e\u043a\u0437\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b<\/strong> [train station] and grab some <strong>\u043f\u0438\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/strong> [baked or fried buns with a variety of fillings].<\/p>\n<p>I know that you already starving and I would not like anyone to <strong>\u043f\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/strong> [to die of hunger].
