Today I would like to continue the race<\/u> from last week and demonstrate more prefixes and their meanings within the context of physical motion. has a special meaning. It is a perfective verb (even though it looks like the imperfective) and, like several motion verbs with the \u0441<\/strong>– prefix, indicates a trip to a certain destination and back. \u041c\u044b \u0441<\/u>\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0301\u043b\u0438 \u0432 \u043c\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0437\u0438\u0301\u043d<\/strong>. We<\/em> went<\/em> to<\/em> the<\/em> store<\/em>. \u042f \u0441\u0435\u0439\u0447\u0430\u0301\u0441 \u0432 \u0448\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0443 \u0441<\/u>\u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430\u044e<\/strong>. I\u2019m going to drop by the school really quick. (<\/em>from \u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0442\u044c to run). \u201cHow was your trip?\u201d in Russian would be \u041a\u0430\u043a <\/strong>\u0432\u044b <\/strong>\u0441<\/u><\/strong>\u044a\u0435\u0301<\/strong>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u043b\u0438? <\/strong>\u0421\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301<\/strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> implies the same motion, but suggests a quicker trip.<\/p>\n

\u0418\u0437<\/strong>– has several meanings, including \u201cout of a physical place,\u201d but in this meaning it differs from \u0432\u044b<\/strong>– in that it seems to suggest \u201cto exhaustion\u201d or \u201cto destruction.\u201d \u0418\u0441\u0447\u0435\u0440\u043f\u0430\u0301<\/strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> to exhaust, deplete<\/em>. \u0418\u0441\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430\u0301<\/strong>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> to run out of stuff to write about<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With \u0433\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, this verb means \u201cto chase something out,\u201d which makes it a synonym for \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and \u0432\u044b\u0301<\/strong>\u0433\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, but it also is used as something more intense, like \u201cto banish.\u201d For example, the Russian translation of the title of the 1973 film The Exorcist<\/em> is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0418\u0437\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f\u0301<\/strong>\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0434\u044c\u044f\u0301<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>, or \u201cthe one who banishes the devil.\u201d<\/p>\n
