This dish, of course, is one of my personal favorites, not only to eat, but also to make. But what if you take a bite of a <strong><em>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c<\/em><\/strong> and realize you don\u2019t like it? Or maybe you\u2019re a <strong>\u0432\u0435\u0433\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0435\u0446<\/strong> vegetarian and realize that this dish is, in fact, for meat lovers? <strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443! <\/strong>This is what you say in Russian when you are mimicking the sound of spitting, the subject of today\u2019s blog, which is about spitting.<\/p>\n<p>Spitting holds a special place in the hearts of Russian people, which is reflected in the many sayings centered around this verb. Here are a few of them.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the word we\u2019ve already learned. This word is a <strong>\u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong>\u00a0<em>interjection<\/em> that mimics the sound of someone spitting. You can say it as an expression of disgust, hatred, or disapproval for something:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;<\/strong><strong>\u0422\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0438\u0448\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043a\u0438?<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Do you like shrimp?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043a\u0438? <\/strong><strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443!<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Shrimp? Yuck!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can say it when you make a mistake (usually verbal, that is, you misspoke). Also, the most important meaning of this word comes in the following form:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443-\u0442\u044c\u0444\u0443-\u0442\u044c\u0444\u0443, \u0447\u0442\u043e\u0301\u0431\u044b \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0437\u0438\u0442\u044c!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Here, this expression, used in rapid succession three (also sometimes two) times is the exact equivalent to knocking on wood in English. This is sometimes accompanied by the speaker turning their head and spitting on the imaginary <strong>\u0447\u0451\u0440\u0442<\/strong> <em>devil<\/em> that stands on their left shoulder. <strong>\u0421\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means \u201cto jinx something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you are wondering how this strange combination of letters is pronounced, you can hear it pronounced in the video below, from the 1973 Soviet classic <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443 \u043d\u0430 \u0412\u0430\u0441... \u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443 \u043d\u0430 \u0412\u0430\u0441 \u0435\u0449\u0451 \u0440\u0430\u0437&quot;.\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xfy84cIW5f4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here Miloslavsky says <strong>\u2013<\/strong><strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0441!<\/strong>, which is an expression of disrespect, something kind of like \u201cgo to hell.\u201d It is also an interjection by itself, like it <strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044b!<\/strong> <em>Damn<\/em><em> it<\/em><em>!<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0422\u044c\u0444\u0443 \u0442\u044b! \u041e\u043f\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c \u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0444\u043e\u0301\u043d \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u0431\u044b\u0301\u043b!<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15026-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Darn it! I forgot my phone at work again!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u041f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We just dove right in without establishing our word network. The verb of \u201cto spit\u201d is <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (<strong>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u044e\u044e\u0301, <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u044e\u0451\u0448\u044c<\/strong>) and the perfective form is <strong>\u043f\u043b\u044e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044c<\/strong>. The noun is <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a<\/strong>. <strong>\u041f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is usually used in the infinitive along with the dative case, as seen in the example here: <strong>\u041c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c!<\/strong> is a similar way of saying <strong>\u041c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u0451 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0301!<\/strong> <em>I don\u2019t care!<\/em> You can use this with any noun to express this same idea. <strong>\u0415\u043c\u0443\u0301 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> <em>he doesn\u2019t give a damn<\/em>, <strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> <em>nobody gives a damn<\/em>, <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0442\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> <em>the president doesn\u2019t give a damn<\/em>. Who spits at the ceiling? I guess in Russia, lazy people do. This is something similar to some expressions you may know, such as <strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> to do nothing, <strong>\u043f\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0435\u0446 <\/strong><strong>\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0435\u0446 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> to not hit one finger with another, or <strong>\u0441\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0430\u0301 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0438<\/strong> to sit with folded arms.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u041f\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0438\u0432 \u0432\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>To spit against the wind<\/em>. This expression is more descriptive and quite similar to something we would say in English. The expression means to do something pointless, a small effort against a much bigger force.
