How much do we know about this incredibly diverse country, the largest located entirely in Europe? Today I would like to explore the country going into the season of Lent, as this largely Christian country, mostly Orthodox in the East and mostly Catholic in the west, is a great study for religious traditions in Eastern Europe. As the season of Lent is upon us, let\u2019s explore how it is observed.<\/p>\n<p>In Russian, \u201cLent\u201d is <strong>\u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442<\/strong>, literally translated as \u201cThe Great Fast\u201d (as it does in Ukrainian, too). During the time of <strong>\u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442<\/strong>, <strong>\u0432\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0443\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0435<\/strong> <em>the faithful\/believers<\/em> prepare themselves for the celebration of <strong>\u041f\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0445\u0430<\/strong> <em>Easter<\/em>. In Ukraine, traditional food includes <strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> <em>dumplings<\/em> (usually boiled, similar to Polish pierogi) and <strong>\u0441\u044b\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>. It also includes an interesting tradition known as <strong>\u041a\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/strong> <em>Kolodka<\/em>, a Slavic tradition observed traditionally by Ukrainians, in which a small log was tied to the legs of young men and women who had not managed to get married before the season started, as punishment. The young men and women had to \u201cbuy\u201d their freedom back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041e\u0441\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043d\u0438, <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15042\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15042-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_15042-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Special days observed during Lent<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301<\/strong> &#8211; The Catholic tradition of Lent begins with <em>Ash Wednesday<\/em>, in which <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u043b<\/strong> <em>ashes<\/em> are smeared on the foreheads of believers as a sign of mortality and repentance. This tradition would be found in Roman Catholic communities in places like <strong>\u041b\u044c\u0432\u043e\u0432<\/strong> <em>Lviv<\/em>, located in the western part of the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0449\u0451\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u044c\u0435<\/strong> \u2013 in the eastern Christian religion, this day is marked by asking forgiveness, \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0449\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435 of those dear to you. This has actually become a tradition in wider society, beyond just believers, in which people will ask each other forgiveness or post on social media, urging followers to forgive them for whatever bad they may have done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0427\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> \u2013 This is the technical first day of Lent in the Eastern Church. It is a celebration of <strong>\u0412\u0445\u043e\u0434 <\/strong><strong>\u0413\u043e\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0435\u0440\u0443\u0441\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043c<\/strong> <em>The Entry of the Lord<\/em> <em>into Jerusalem<\/em>. While this is known as <em>Palm Sunday<\/em> in English, in countries like Ukraine there are typically no palms available, and so the willow tree, traditionally an important tree in Slavic tradition, replaced it. On this day, <strong>\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0451 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0431\u043e\u0439<\/strong> <em>beating with a willow<\/em> (usually of children by adults) was an important part of the celebration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0421\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0430\u0301\u044f (\u0412\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u044f) <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u044f\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430 <\/strong><em>Good (Great) Friday<\/em> \u2013 This day is the commemoration of <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u044f\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong> <em>the crucifixion<\/em>. In the Eastern church it is celebrated with carrying out the <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0449\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong>, a large image of the dead Christ embroidered on a cloth.
