Through the first 15 chapters of Master and Margarita I hoped that it\u2019d be Josefina\u2019s turn once we get to \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u0430\u0437\u043d\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Execution]. But now that she\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0448\u043b\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u043e\u0442 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [withdraw from business], it falls to me to write about Chapter 16 of the Bulgakov\u2019s novel\u2026 Personally, I find it hard to write about the chapters that take place in the ancient Yershalaim so Josefina used to talk about those with her usual grace and skill. So what am I going to do now as we get to the exact mid-point of the novel (the entire novel is 32 chapters)?<\/p>\n

As the name suggests, the entire chapter describes the scene and the proceedings of Yeshua\u2019s execution. It also introduces a new character, Yeshua\u2019s only disciple \u00ab<\/strong>\u041b\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430\u0442\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Levi Matvei]. So I thought it\u2019d be interesting to figure out Levi Matvei\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [doubles] in the novel.<\/p>\n

If Master and Margarita had \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u043b\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u0447\u0438\u0441\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [a magic number], it would definitely be the number \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [three]. After all, the novel spans three worlds – \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0440\u0435\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [the modern world] (chapters that take place in Moscow), \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [the biblical world] (chapters that take place in Yershalaim], and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0443\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [the \u201cother\u201d world of Woland and his retinue]. Each major character in these worlds has his or her \u00ab<\/strong>\u044d\u043a\u0432\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [counterparts] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [doubles] in the other two worlds. They form \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [triads] of the novel. For example, \u00ab\u041f\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0438\u0439 \u041f\u0438\u043b\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [Pontius Pilate] in the biblical world mirrors \u00ab\u0412\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [Woland] in the \u201cother\u201d world and \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0440 \u0421\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Professor Stravinsky] in Moscow world.<\/p>\n

Actually, the triads extend to more than just the characters. They also span the episodes and scene descriptions:<\/p>\n

Biblical World: \u00ab\u0421\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435 \u0443\u0436\u0435<\/span> \u0441\u043d\u0438\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c \u043d\u0430\u0434 \u041b\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u0439 \u0413\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0439…\u00bb<\/strong> [The sun was already sinking behind Bald Mountain\u2026]<\/p>\n

That\u2019s Chapter 16 opening that brings to mind the opening words of the novel from Chapter 1 (set in the contemporary world): \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412 <\/strong>\u0447\u0430\u0441 <\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0435\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430…\u00bb<\/strong> [One hot spring evening, just as the sun was going down\u2026]<\/p>\n

And, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0432\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0451<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [jumping ahead] to Chapter 29, the \u201cother\u201d world: \u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435 <\/strong>\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0430…\u00bb<\/strong> [At sunset\u2026]<\/p>\n

There are several words in Chapter 16 that are not widely used in everyday Russian language, such as \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0446\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [commander of a century, a fighting unit in Roman army], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Roman cavalry unit], etc. But one word that is present and used is \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [procurator]. Actually, it\u2019s not so much this exact word as the related \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [counsel for the prosecution] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [prosecutor\u2019s office] as in such news headlines as<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u0433. <\/strong>\u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 <\/strong>\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043e\u0431 <\/strong>\u0438<\/span><\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [The Prosecutor\u2019s Office in Vladimir Prohibits to Speak the Truth]<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0423 <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043d <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b <\/strong>\u041a\u0438\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0435\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0438 <\/strong>\u0432\u0437\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Three Blasts Rocked the Walls of the Prosecutor\u2019s Office in Kirovograd]<\/p>\n

And my favorite one (linguistically) \u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043f\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0430\u043c <\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u043b\u043e\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [The Prosecutor\u2019s Office (Lightly) Reproached Bailiffs for Procrastination]<\/p>\n

Ah, but back to Levi Matvei and his \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [doubles]. His \u201ccontemporary world\u201d counterpart is \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u0420\u044e<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [the poet Ryukhin], the fellow writer who delivered hapless Ivan Bezdomny to the psychiatric clinic. Do you know the second counterpart? It’s a trick question, I admit, ’cause this second person has not yet, as of Chapter 16, entered the “other” world although he did have quite an encounter with it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
