His role as the cornerstone of Russian classical music was cemented by several operas he wrote, which are a part of the regular repertoire of every opera company in Russia and every major opera house in the West, including <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0416\u0438\u0437\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0430\u0440\u044f\u0301\u00bb <\/strong>(originally titled <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0443\u0441\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong>, which was also the name used for the opera during the Soviet era), and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0420\u0443\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u041b\u044e\u0434\u043c\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on an 1820 poem by Alexander Pushkin, the opera dives into the world of Russian folktales and features a sorcerer, a bard, the Great Prince of Kiev, and the eponymous Ruslan and Lyudmila, a newlywed couple separated at their own wedding banquet.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anna Netrebko - Ruslan and Lyudmila\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KScPMs8YlDA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here we can see Lyudmila being played by Anna Netrebko (1971- ), one of the biggest names in modern opera. Originally from Krasnodar, Russia, she currently lives in Austria and regularly makes headlines. She is a treat to see in any role with her beautiful soprano and acting that is always great fun to watch. He composed his First Symphony in 1925 at 19 as a graduation piece.<\/p>\n<p>He composed <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0431\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0446\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> over several years, but the opera was first performed in 1934. Shostakovich was used to navigating the dangerous world of the arts during the Stalin years. However, he was unlucky enough to have had Stalin himself attend one of the performances of this opera, in 1936. This led to a publication of an article in the Soviet newspaper <strong>\u041f\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0434\u0430<\/strong> entitled <strong>\u0421\u0443\u043c\u0431\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0440 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043c\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0438 \u2013 <\/strong><strong>\u041e\u0431 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435 \u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0431\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0446\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>, believed to have been written by Stalin himself, and part of his attack on formalism. (You can find the text of the original article, translated into English, <a href=\"https:\/\/soviethistory.msu.edu\/1936-2\/upheaval-in-the-opera\/upheaval-in-the-opera-text\/chaos-instead-of-music\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>The opera was reconfigured by Shostakovich and rebranded as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0437\u043c\u0430\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0439\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>, the name of the main character in the original story by Nikolai Leskov that told the story of a bored merchant\u2019s wife who falls in love with a farm hand and starts a killing spree with him:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Katerina Izmailova Vishnevskaya Shostakovich 1966\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7A6K2BeCMz0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Galina Vishnevskaya (1926-2012) was the shining star of the Soviet stage. She and her husband, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, were the power couple of Soviet classical music and both led illustrious careers both within the Soviet Union and abroad. They eventually left the Soviet Union in 1974.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u0414\u043c\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0439 \u0425\u0432\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u2013 \u00ab\u0415\u0432\u0433\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u041e\u043d\u0435\u0301\u0433\u0438\u043d\u00bb \u041f\u0435\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301 \u0427\u0430\u0439\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Piotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is probably the most well-known Russian composer of all time. His melodies are familiar to a majority of people on the planet. His impressive body of work includes three ballets, four concertos, six symphonies, and ten operas.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps his most famous opera, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0415\u0432\u0433\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u041e\u043d\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> is a story based on Pushkin\u2019s novel in verse of the same name, about a man, an archetype in Russian literature known as a \u043b\u0438\u0448\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435\u043a, who wastes his life with cynicism and boredom. Here you can see Onegin, played by the famous Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, rejecting the beautiful Tatyana, who has just bared her soul to him in a love letter.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dmitri Hvorostovsky - Eugene Onegin - Onegin&#039;s Act I aria\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qa_13xMhjkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962-2017) was a Russian baritone, and a prominent star of the post-Soviet Russian operatic stage. His incredible talent brought him all across the stages of Europe and the US, including alongside his colleague and friend Anna Netrebko. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 53 and died of brain cancer in 2017.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u0424\u0451\u0434\u043e\u0440 \u0428\u0430\u043b\u044f\u0301\u043f\u0438\u043d \u2013 \u00ab\u0411\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0441 \u0413\u043e\u0434\u0443\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0432\u00bb \u041c\u043e\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u0430 \u041c\u0443\u0301\u0441\u043e\u0440\u0433\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was one of \u201cThe Five\u201d (<strong>\u041c\u043e\u0433\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>) of Russian classical music. Although his career and life were very short, he managed to produce some of the most remarkable works of Russian music known throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0411\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0413\u043e\u0434\u0443\u043d\u043e\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> tells of the ill-fated Russian tsar who reigned from 1598 to 1605, during the Time of Troubles (<strong>\u0421\u043c\u0443\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u044f<\/strong>) of Russian history, in which there was a crisis of succession, and after which the Romanov dynasty, which would rule Russia until the Revolution, took power.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u0424\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0440 \u0428\u0430\u043b\u044f\u043f\u0438\u043d -\u0411\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0441 \u0413\u043e\u0434\u0443\u043d\u043e\u0432\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QtxT6QU9SwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Feodor Shaliapin (1873-1938) was a Russian bass who established his career in Russia well before the Revolution of 1917.
