Learning Russian is no walk in Gorky Park, something I suppose most of you are already more than well aware of. Often we talk about the difficulties of this language, we try to sort out verbs of motions and what not, but when was the last time you heard someone talk about how much fun it is? Because it is fun! Learning a new language is more than simply getting a new set of foreign words and grammatical rules, it is giving yourself another way of expressing yourself, new emotions to go with those new words, new jokes to make with the help of those grammatical rules. I have long suspected that the main reason as to why I spent so many hours slaving over my homework when I was studying \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b<\/span>\u043a \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0438\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[Russian as a foreign language] in Omsk, Siberia, was because nobody laughed at my jokes. To make people laugh I had to learn how to be funny in Russian. (Yes, it took more time than just managing to say \u00ab\u0421\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u0442 \u0432\u043e\u043d \u0442\u0430 \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430 \u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0445\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u0430?\u00bb<\/strong> [How much does that loaf of dark bread over there cost?] or \u00ab\u041c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c \u0442\u0443\u0430\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c?\u00bb<\/strong> [May I use your restroom?] but it was definitely worth it!) With time you\u2019ll come to know that the person you were when speaking Spanish back in school has nothing to do with the person who memorized Pushkin\u2019s famous poem \u00ab\u042f \u0432\u0430\u0441 \u043b\u044e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong>. Speaking of funny, today I came across an interview with a teacher of Russian language as a foreign language <\/a>, and especially her answer to the last one of the seven questions posed to her made me laugh out loud.<\/p>\n

I tried and I tried to figure out funny things like that, literal translations I made when just starting out learning Russian, but it seems my mind is blank today. Maybe someone else would like to share a funny mistake they\u2019ve made, like the one above?
