Did you enjoy reading Chapter 17 of Bulgakov\u2019s \u201cMaster and Margarita\u201d?<\/em> \u00ab\u041b\u0438\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb [personally], I love all of it, from the sniffing dog \u00ab<\/strong>\u0422\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u0435\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> whose \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [name] literally means Ace of Diamonds to the empty suit, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0435\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u0449\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [conducting business] to the hapless and unwilling \u00ab<\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [choir].<\/p>\n

But what I love even more is the great examples of everyday conversational Russian. Consider the case of the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [no] that appears throughout the chapter. Is it just a careless way of saying \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [no]?<\/p>\n

It seems to be used interchangeably with the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0438\u043a\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u043e\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c. \u0421\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u041b\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0430 \u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435 \u043d\u0435\u0442. \u0414\u043e\u043c\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u044b \u0413\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u043d\u0438 \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u0438 \u043a\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span> \u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u0434\u0435\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c, \u043d\u0438\u043a\u0442\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442.\u00bb<\/strong> [No magician was to be found. \u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u043e \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043b\u043e<\/span> \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043c\u0438\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442, \u0430 \u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443.\u00bb<\/strong> [But then ten minutes passed, but he wasn\u2019t back yet.]<\/p>\n

Then again a lot of times \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> comes up in \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u044f\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0440\u0435\u0447\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [direct or quoted speech], as in<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0421\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438, \u0447\u0442\u043e<\/span> \u043b\u0438, \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443?\u00bb – \u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u043e \u0441\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0431\u0443\u0445\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0442\u0435\u0440.<\/strong><\/p>\n

[\u201cAre you short on change?\u201d the bookkeeper asked timidly.]<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u043c\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0438<\/span>! – \u043a\u0440\u0438\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>, \u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u044f\u0441\u044c \u043d\u0435\u0438\u0437\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>. – \u041f\u0438\u0434\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043a \u0438 \u0448\u0442\u0430\u043d\u044b<\/span> \u0442\u0443\u0442, \u0430 \u0432 \u043f\u0438\u0434\u0436\u0430\u043a\u0435<\/span> \u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443!\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

[\u201cHe\u2019s not there, not there, not there, my dears!\u201d she was screaming, to no one knows whom. \u201cHis jacket and trousers are there, but there\u2019s nothing in the jacket!\u201d]<\/p>\n

Ok, no more suspense – yes, such word exists as confirmed by a number of most-respected dictionaries of Russian language. It is generally used as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u043c\u043e\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a predicate] – a word or phrase in a sentence that answers the question of what the object of the sentence is doing, did in the past or will do in the future.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that in many cases the words \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> can be used interchangeably, although the latter is viewed as \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> \u00a0[vernacular], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0440\u0435\u0447\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [everyday speech].<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re talking about an absence of something or someone, go ahead and use \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> instead of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> if you wish:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0435\u0442, \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0433 \u0443 \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443.\u00bb<\/strong> [No, I don\u2019t have money.] – handy when talking to whomever it is you don\u2019t feel like \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0432\u0437\u0430\u0439\u043c\u044b<\/span> <\/strong>\u0434\u043e <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [to lend money \u2018til payday]<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u0435\u0442 <\/strong>\u0443 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438, <\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443 <\/strong>\u043e\u0434\u0435\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [We have neither a pillow, nor a blanket]. That\u2019s actually a line from \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [Cat\u2019s House], a beloved old cartoon.<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0423 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432!\u00bb<\/strong> [The words fail me!]. It\u2019s well-known that a person who indignantly proclaims this is impossible to shut up.<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0420\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432 <\/strong>\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [There are no lottery results yet]<\/p>\n

However, if \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> is used as a negative determiner, then it can\u2019t be replaced with \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> without losing the original meaning. Example would be the phrase \u00ab<\/strong>\u041e\u043d <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b <\/strong>\u0438<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442?\u00bb<\/strong> [Has he arrived or not?] or a popular (in the US) anti-drug slogan \u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0436\u0438<\/span> – <\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [Just say \u201cno\u201d]. Using \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> in the former sounds funny while in the latter it changes the meaning of the phrase to \u201cJust say \u201cthere are none\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finally, a quick note on the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [no] – it is a diminutive of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong>, not of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong>. It is a vernacular particle that\u2019s used mostly by children (and by adults who act childishly) to express their \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0441\u043e\u0433\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [disagreement] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [objection] tinged with \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [bitterness].<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438, \u044f \u043d\u0435 \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443 \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0441 \u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u0439 \u0438\u0433\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [No way I will share toys with Vasya!]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
