Consider the case of the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [no] that appears throughout the chapter. It is generally used as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u043c\u043e\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a predicate] &#8211; a word or phrase in a sentence that answers the question of what the object of the sentence is doing, did in the past or will do in the future.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that in many cases the words <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> can be used interchangeably, although the latter is viewed as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> \u00a0[vernacular], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435\u0447\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [everyday speech].<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019re talking about an absence of something or someone, go ahead and use <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> instead of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> if you wish:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0435\u0442, \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0433 \u0443 \u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443.\u00bb<\/strong> [No, I don\u2019t have money.] &#8211; handy when talking to whomever it is you don\u2019t feel like <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0437\u0430\u0439\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [to lend money \u2018til payday]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438, <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0434\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [We have neither a pillow, nor a blanket]. It\u2019s well-known that a person who indignantly proclaims this is impossible to shut up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0420\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [There are no lottery results yet]<\/p>\n<p>However, if <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> is used as a negative determiner, then it can\u2019t be replaced with <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> without losing the original meaning. Example would be the phrase <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041e\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442?\u00bb<\/strong> [Has he arrived or not?] or a popular (in the US) anti-drug slogan <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> &#8211; <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [Just say \u201cno\u201d]. Using <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> in the former sounds funny while in the latter it changes the meaning of the phrase to \u201cJust say \u201cthere are none\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a quick note on the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [no] &#8211; it is a diminutive of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong>, not of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong>.
