And, I suppose, there is a fourth one as well: writing about those three main topics, especially in relation to Russia. So today, we are going to learn<strong> \u00ab\u043e\u0431 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [about Uglich].<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0431\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> \u0432 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0435 \u0432 \u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u043b\u0435 2009 (\u0434\u0432\u0435 \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0438 \u0434\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e) \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430 \u0438 \u043c\u043d\u0435 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043f\u043e\u043d\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u043b\u0441\u044f.\u00bb<\/strong> [I was in Uglich in July 2009 and I really liked it.] But you are probably wondering: <strong>\u00ab\u0447\u0442\u043e \u0442\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0435 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447?\u00bb<\/strong> [what is Uglich?] <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447&#8211;\u043d\u0435\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434 \u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438.\u00bb<\/strong> [Uglich is a small city in Russia.] <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043d \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> \u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0433\u0435 \u0432 \u042f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0438.\u00bb<\/strong> [It is located on the Volga River in the Yaroslav oblast (<em>an oblast is a federal subject of Russia)<\/em>.] <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0430\u0441\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435&#8211;34,258 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a.\u00bb<\/strong> [The population is 34,258 people. <em>Notice how I used the genitive plural <strong>\u00ab\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> here because we are referring to a specific number of people. If we were quantifying with the word <strong>\u00ab\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [a lot, many], we would use the form <strong>\u00ab\u043b\u044e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>A little bit about the history of Uglich: <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0442 \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434 \u0431\u044b\u043b \u043e\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u043d \u0432 937 (\u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0435\u0434\u044c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c) \u0433\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [this city was founded in the year 937]. That makes Uglich <strong>\u00ab\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434 \u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [the oldest city in Russia]. This fact makes <strong>\u00ab\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0434\u0438, \u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0435 \u0436\u0438\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442 \u0432 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [people who live in Uglich] very proud. (Though I am sure any natives of Kiev will be quick to point this out: <strong>\u00ab\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432 \u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0448\u0435, \u0447\u0435\u043c <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [Kiev is older than Uglich]). And it was in Uglich that <strong>\u00ab\u0414\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0439 \u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447, \u0441\u044b\u043d \u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430 \u0413\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [Dmitry Ivanovich, the son of Ivan the Terrible], was assassinated <strong>\u00ab\u0432 1591 (\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0430 \u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043c) \u0433\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in the year 1591]. <strong>\u00ab\u0415\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span> \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c \u043b\u0435\u0442.\u00bb<\/strong> [He was only eight years old.] Dmitry&#8217;s assassination precipitated a political crisis, and for years afterward, people pretending to be the long-dead prince tried to claim the throne on his behalf, saying that he actually had not died.<\/p>\n<p>What can one see in Uglich? What <strong>\u00ab\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [tourist attractions, sights] are in this charming town? Many! My personal favorite is <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0423<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Uglich kremlin]. There you can see <strong>\u00ab\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c \u0414\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u041a\u0440\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Church of Dmitry on the Blood]. Of all the churches I&#8217;ve seen in Russia (and believe me, <strong>\u00ab\u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438 \u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u0446\u0435\u0440\u043a\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [there are many churches in Russia]), I think this one in Uglich is one of my favorites (and so it is this church that is featured in the photo for this post).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0435\u0449\u0451?\u00bb<\/strong> [What else?] There are a few monasteries in Uglich as well, and museums. I haven&#8217;t been to any of the museums, but I&#8217;d love to go to <strong>\u00ab\u041c\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [the Doll Museum] someday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Did you like this post?
