In case you haven’t noticed, \u00ab\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0435 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [dear friends], \u00ab\u044f \u043b\u044e\u0431\u043b\u044e<\/span> \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0435\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [I love to travel]. \u00ab\u041a \u0441\u043e\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [Unfortunately], traveling can be quite expensive (which is why I’m not eager to buy my plane ticket back to England in January). But never mind that: let’s talk \u00ab\u043e \u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [about Kiev], one of my favorite cities in the world.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042f \u0431\u044b\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0432 \u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0434 \u043d\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [I was in Kiev a year ago]. Unlike the part of the trip in Russia, when we were on a ship, in Kiev we were \u00ab\u0432 \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in a hotel]. The hotel was the Radisson Blu and if you are going to Kiev anytime soon, \u00ab\u044f \u0431\u044b \u0440\u0435\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u0443 \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [I would recommend this hotel]. (The hotel even has a website<\/a>, by the way.) It is very conveniently located \u00ab\u0432 \u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0440\u0435 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [in the center of the city].<\/p>\n

What is there to see in Kiev? Lots! \u00ab\u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u2014\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [Kiev is a very old city], so there are lots of interesting historical sites. One of my favorite places \u00ab\u0421\u043e\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [St. Sophia’s Cathedral; also called \u00ab\u0421\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440 \u0421\u0432\u044f\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0421\u043e\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong>]. \u00ab\u041e\u043d \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440 \u0438 \u0431\u044b\u043b \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0435\u043d \u0432 XI (\u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u043e\u043c) \u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0435 \u043f\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0443 \u042f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0430 \u041c\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [It is an orthodox cathedral and was built in the eleventh century on the order of Yaroslav the Wise]. If I remember correctly, services are no longer held in the cathedral because they could damage the woodwork on the walls. (Though apparently the previous president of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, still would go to a service there occasionally.) Also, the photo at the top of this post is of \u00ab\u0421\u043e\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another wonderful place to see is \u00ab\u0410\u043d\u0434\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [Andreyev descent], where \u00ab\u0434\u043e\u043c \u0411\u0443\u043b\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Bulgakov’s house] is located. I love all Russian literature, but \u00ab\u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0410\u0444\u0430\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0411\u0443\u043b\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u2014\u043c\u043e\u0439 \u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439 \u043b\u044e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov is my favorite writer]. \u00ab\u041e\u043d \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0430 \u0438 \u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0443<\/em>\u00bb<\/strong> [He wrote The Master and Margarita<\/em>], which we’ve been reading on this very blog. Another of his novels, \u00ab\u0411\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044f \u0433\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [The White Guard<\/em>], not as well known as The Master and Margarita<\/em> but no less inspired a work, takes place at \u00ab\u0410\u043d\u0434\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0413\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0430 \u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0430 \u043d\u0430\u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f \u041a\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [Kiev’s main street is called Kreshchatik]. It may seem silly to recommend a visit to a street, but \u00ab\u041a\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> is no ordinary street: on weekends, it is closed to traffic and people like to \u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u043e \u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [walk along the street] and enjoy themselves.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042f \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043b\u044e\u0431\u043b\u044e<\/span> \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434 \u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [I simply love the city of Kiev]. I hope to tell you more about it in the future, especially its history.<\/p>\n
