I&#8217;ll be splitting up these posts on <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f \u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the history of Kiev] into multiple parts to make them more manageable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There exists <strong>\u00ab\u043b\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a legend] concerning <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the founding of Kiev]. According to this legend, <strong>\u00ab\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432 \u0431\u044b\u043b \u043e\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u043d \u0442\u0440\u0435\u043c\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u044f\u043c\u0438 \u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u043c, \u0429\u0435\u043a\u043e\u043c \u0438 \u0425\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0432\u043e\u043c \u0438 \u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u041b\u044b\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044c\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [Kiev was founded by the three brothers Kiy, Shchek, and Khoriv and their sister Lybed]. The picture at the beginning of this post is a monument in Kiev that commemorates this legend, or <strong>\u00ab\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a \u043e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u043c \u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a monument to the founders of Kiev].<\/p>\n<p>Another legend says that <strong>\u00ab\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> emerged from <strong>\u00ab\u0425\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043a\u0430\u0433\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [the Khazar khaganate] and was named in honor of <strong>\u00ab\u0445\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0432\u0438\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440 \u041a\u0443\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [the Khazar vizier Kui].<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, archaeological evidence suggests that the first settlements <strong>\u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0435\u0440\u0440\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0438 \u041f\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [on the territory of Podol <em>(an area in Kiev)<\/em>] appeared no earlier than the 880s. The date of the conversion is generally given as <strong>\u00ab988 (\u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f\u0442 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439) \u0433\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [the year 988] with <strong>\u00ab\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043a\u043d\u044f\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0440 I \u0421\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [the baptism of Prince Vladimir I Svyatoslavich <em>or<\/em> Vladimir I of Kiev]. After Vladimir was baptized, he urged the people living in Kiev to be baptized <strong>\u00ab\u0432 \u0440\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> \u0414\u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in the river Dnieper], thus rejecting the traditional <strong>\u00ab\u044f\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [paganism] that had been present in Kiev.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0420\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442 \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0420\u0443\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the result of the baptism of Kievan Rus] was that it became firmly aligned with the Byzantine Empire.
