But now I am back and ready to teach you about Kiev&#8217;s history (parts 1 and 2 are <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/a-history-of-kiev-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/a-history-of-kiev-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, respectively). No one is sure exactly what day he was born, but a Ukrainian historian has suggested that <strong>\u00ab\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430 \u0440\u043e\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [his birthdate] was December 27. Not much is known about his early education either, but we do know that <strong>\u00ab\u0425\u043c\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u0431\u044b\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u0432 \u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u0445 \u0435\u0432\u0440\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [Khmelnitsky traveled to many European countries]. He probably was well educated because he learned many languages: <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u043d \u0432\u043b\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c, \u043b\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c, \u0442\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u043c, \u043a\u0440\u044b\u043c\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c \u0438 \u0444\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [he knew the Polish, Latin, Turkish, Crimean Tatar, and French languages].<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0425\u043c\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> fought against the Turks and was held a prisoner in Constantinople for two years, after which <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u043d \u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0421\u0443\u0431\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0432, \u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [he returned to Subotov, his hometown]. He became a member of the Cossacks. <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u0410\u043d\u043d\u0435 \u0421\u043e\u043c\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [He married Anna Somkovna].<\/p>\n<p>When a new Polish magnate came to power, he decided to seize Khmelnitsky&#8217;s estate. The Polish authorities refused to help <strong>\u00ab\u0425\u043c\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong>. During all of this, <strong>\u00ab\u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> \u0425\u043c\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0443\u043c\u0435\u0440\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Khmelnitsky&#8217;s wife died].<\/p>\n<p>Finally, discontented with Polish rule, Khmelnitsky rebelled. He led <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [an uprising] in 1648. <strong>\u00ab\u041a\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>, \u043e\u043d \u043f\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043b \u0438 \u043e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043c\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [In short, he won and founded a Hetmanate]. <strong>\u00ab\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b \u0441 \u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [The negotiations with the Poles] eventually led to a treaty with the Russian state, which in turn led to Ukraine&#8217;s incorporation into the Russian Empire. Khmelnitsky died in 1657 from a cerebral hemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p>Though the history of Khmelnitsky is more about Ukraine as a whole than Kiev, it is still important. After all, Kiev has a huge monument to Khmelnitsky and it was into Kiev that Khmelnitsky marched to mark his victory. And it was Khmelnitsky who was instrumental in making sure that Ukraine would be closely tied to Russia, not Poland.<\/p>\n<p><em>Next time, we&#8217;ll talk about the period up to <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the (Russian) Civil War], then conclude with an account of Ukraine as a part of the Soviet Union.
