I really did not want to, I assure you. \u00ab\u041d\u043e \u043c\u043d\u0435 \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [But I had to finish my essay (literally “written work”)<\/em>]. But luckily, this does not mean I have run out of ideas for posts on this blog. This is the second post in a series, so please read<\/a> the first part if you have not already, otherwise this will not make much sense.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Translation:<\/p>\n

And through frozen sleep one hundred thousand footsteps
\nOf enemies and friends, friends and enemies.<\/em><\/p>\n

You cannot see the end of the procession
\nFrom the vase of granite to the doors of the palace.<\/em><\/p>\n

There my white nights are whispering
\nAbout someone’s lofty and secret love.<\/em><\/p>\n

And everything burns with mother-of-pearl and jasper,
\nBut the source of the light is mysteriously hidden.<\/em><\/p>\n

Obviously it is better \u00ab\u0432 \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043b\u0438\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in the original] and I know I am \u00ab\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0447\u0438\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a bad translator] of poetry.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite things about this poem is the longing present in it. \u00ab\u0410\u0445\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430 \u0442\u043e\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Akhmatova longed for her homeland] but after the revolution in 1917, that homeland did not exist anymore. I think she used St. Petersburg as a metaphor for the Russia of her youth because she was not born in St. Petersburg. \u00ab\u0421\u0430\u043d\u043a\u0442-\u041f\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433 \u0431\u044b\u043b \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0435\u0439 \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0438\u043c\u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [St. Petersburg was the capital of the former Russian empire].<\/p>\n
