The dictionary translation of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> is scarlet. 2. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0416\u0438\u043b-\u0431\u044b\u043b<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> – This expression (and its corresponding feminine and plural forms \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0438\u043b\u0430<\/span>-\u0431\u044b\u043b\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438-\u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u0438<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>) is often found at the beginning of children\u2019s stories, and is equivalent to \u201conce upon a time\u201d. It is a relic from a time when the Russian verb system was more complex than it is now. The past tense forms we now use, agreeing with the subject in gender and number, were originally past participles used to form a perfect tense, using the appropriate present tense form of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> as the auxiliary verb.
