So, in this post I will tell you all about \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0412\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [Sergey Viktorovich (i.e. Lavrov)] and my tiring but exciting day last Tuesday.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041a\u0442\u043e \u0442\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u041b\u0430\u0432\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Who is Sergey Lavrov]? If you are a hardcore Russia watcher, you will probably know the answer to this question. \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u041b\u0430\u0432\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432 \u2013\u2013 \u043c\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440 \u0438\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u0434\u0435\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [Sergey Lavrov is the Minister of Foreign Affairs (or you could simply translate this as Foreign Minister)<\/em>]. \u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [He was born in Moscow]. He received his university education at \u00ab\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0442 \u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439 (\u041c\u0413\u0418\u041c\u041e)\u00bb<\/strong> [Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO)]. He has worked \u00ab\u0432 \u041c\u0418\u0414\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in MID, i.e. the Foreign Ministry] for many years. No one (or at least very few) in the United States knew of him until the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, presented him with a “reset button” that had the wrong Russian word on it. (It said \u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [reload] instead of \u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [reset].)<\/p>\n

The talk was at \u00ab\u041b\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u043e\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0448\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043a\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445 \u043d\u0430\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [the London School of Economics and Political Science]. \u00ab\u042f \u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u043b\u0430 \u0432 \u041b\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u043e\u043d \u043d\u0430 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [I went to London by bus]. I had to take \u00ab\u041b\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u043e\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [the London Underground, or<\/em> Tube] \u00ab\u0432 \u0447\u0430\u0441 \u043f\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [at rush hour] and let me tell you, it was almost<\/em> as crazy as Moscow.<\/p>\n

The talk was about \u00ab\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian business] and \u00ab\u0440\u0443\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e-\u0431\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian-British relations]. The best part was that the audience was able to ask questions. I waved my hand in the air, but, \u00ab\u043a \u0441\u043e\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [unfortunately] the moderator did not call on me.<\/p>\n

All the questions were interesting. One thing I noticed that amused me was when the British students asked questions, they addressed the Foreign Minister as “Mr. Lavrov,” but the Russian students called him \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0412\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [Sergey Viktorovich]. Hardly surprising being that Russian people address each other \u00ab\u043f\u043e \u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438-\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [by first name and patronymic], but it still made me happy.<\/p>\n

After the talk, \u00ab\u044f \u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u041b\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u043e\u043d\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [I walked around London]. I even went by \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0424\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [the Russian Embassy].
