In the world of silly\/strange\/solicitous statistics, apparently, Russia is – rather unexpectedly, I must admit – the leader when it comes to the number of people that fall out of windows on a daily basis. In Russia 17 people fall out of windows daily. I had almost forgot how to smile, let alone laugh, at the peculiar wonders of Russian reality, when a fellow \u2018Gothenburgian’<\/a><\/em>girl from the Swedish Embassy in Moscow, visiting Yekaterinburg for the \u2018Days of Sweden’ in our city, told me this today during lunch. Until I have found any firm facts to confirm this statement it will remain within the category of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u043a\u0434\u043e\u0442\u044b<\/strong>\u00bb <\/strong><\/a>[anecdote; jokes; funny stories<\/a>], [I’ve been googling myself mad today to find the source for this information, but failed helplessly. If you’ve heard of it or know where it’s from, please let me know!] but it still makes you think, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n

As I am always trying to understand Russia through Russians – \u00ab\u0443\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044e \u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> – and not from jumping to conclusions, I decided to ask some Russians about this, and hear their point of view on the issue as to why their nation has a tendency to fall out of windows.<\/p>\n

The first one said: \u00ab\u042d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u044e\u0442 \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0438<\/span> \u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043d\u0430, \u0430 \u043d\u0435 \u043a\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430\u044f \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f!\u00bb <\/strong>[“It is because Russian themselves clean their windows, and no cleaning company!”]<\/p>\n

The second one said: \u00ab\u041d\u0435\u0442, \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0443 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430 \u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u0434\u0430<\/span> \u0431\u044b\u043b, \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u0438 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043c\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043a \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u0443. \u041f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443 \u0438 \u043f\u044c\u044e\u0442, \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0438\u0437 \u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u043d \u043d\u0435 \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u044e\u0442.\u00bb<\/strong> [“No, it is because the Russian (person)<\/em> always had, always will have and has a yearning to flight (i.e. yearns to fly). <\/em>That’s why they drink, if they’re not falling out of windows, that is.”]<\/p>\n

Then the second person added: \u00ab\u041b\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u0441\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043d\u0430\u043f\u044c\u044e<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f, \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0443\u0442, \u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0430\u043f\u044c\u044e<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f, \u0438 \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0438 \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0445\u0432\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0434\u043b\u044f \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u0430…\u00bb <\/strong>[Either they first get drunk, and then fall out (of windows), or just get drunk, and that’s enough as it is for a flight…]<\/p>\n

Whatever the reason may be for this, uhm, phenomena<\/em> – I myself thought perhaps it had something to do with the current financial crisis and people jumping away from their problems to an instant relief in death from sky scrapers in Moscow, but I may be wrong – there is indeed a lesson in this for everyone to learn. Beware of windows, especially while in Russian Federation. Do not let any people in Irkutsk lure you to lean out of their window to look at the sky on a starry night just because – \u00ab\u0430\u0445, \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0442\u0430<\/span> \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u044f!\u00bb<\/strong> Be careful when cleaning windows in the Volga region, you never know just how slippery soap can be until it is too late. And when tightening those cracks in the Soviet windows of your room in a dormitory in the Urals, make sure not to open them any more than necessary.<\/p>\n

The last advice concerns a very much present problem for me – as winter draws closer and the temperatures drop I might have to do just that this weekend or I’ll be waking up with frost on my eyelashes and that, let me tell you, is overrated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
