You have been in so much suspense about what happens next, right? \ud83d\ude09 Anyway, today we are going to talk about <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the civil war], which is a very serious subject. I heard somewhere that there were possibly <strong>\u00ab\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043c\u0438\u043b\u043b\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432 \u0436\u0435\u0440\u0442\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [ten million victims] in this conflict. I think the exact numbers are disputed, but <strong>\u00ab\u043a\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in short], a lot of people died. If you want to read the prior posts in this series, here they are: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/a-history-of-kiev-part-1\/\">Part 1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/a-history-of-kiev-part-2\/\">Part 2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/a-history-of-kiev-part-3\/\">Part 3<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many fascinating accounts of <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the civil war] have been written. <strong>\u00ab\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d \u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Ivan Bunin\u2013\u2013<em>quick quiz: what distinction is he famous for?<\/em>] wrote <em><strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043a\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong><\/em> [<em>Cursed Days<\/em>] about his time in Moscow. <strong>\u00ab\u0420\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d \u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0411\u0443\u043b\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430 <em>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044f \u0433\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0438\u044f<\/em>\u00bb<\/strong> [Mikhail Bulgakov&#8217;s novel <em>The White Guard<\/em>] is based on Bulgakov&#8217;s experiences in his <strong>\u00ab\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [hometown] of Kiev during the war.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to keep in mind about <strong>\u00ab\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Kiev] in this time is this:<strong> \u00ab\u043e\u043d \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0438\u0437 \u0440\u0443\u043a \u0432 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [it was passed from one hand to another]. <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [For example], <strong>\u00ab\u0434\u043e 7 (\u0441\u0435\u0434\u044c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e) \u043d\u043e\u044f\u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> 1917 (\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0430 \u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u044b\u0439) \u0433\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [until the 7 of November 1917], it was a part of Russia, under <strong>\u00ab\u0412\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [the Provisional Government]. For a brief few months, it became part of <strong>\u00ab\u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043d\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0435\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Ukrainian People&#8217;s Republic], then it was <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0430 \u043d\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0439 \u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [the capital of independent Ukraine].
