I heard somewhere that there were possibly \u00ab\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043c\u0438\u043b\u043b\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432 \u0436\u0435\u0440\u0442\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [ten million victims] in this conflict. I think the exact numbers are disputed, but \u00ab\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in short], a lot of people died. For a brief few months, it became part of \u00ab\u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0435\u0441\u043f\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Ukrainian People’s Republic], then it was \u00ab\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0430 \u043d\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0439 \u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [the capital of independent Ukraine]. (Oddly enough, \u00ab\u0432 \u0442\u043e \u0436\u0435 \u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0435 \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [at the very same time], \u00ab\u0425\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u043a\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Kharkov] was also the capital of Ukraine.)<\/p>\n

Ukraine was under the control of \u00ab\u0421\u0438\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u043d \u0412\u0430\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u041f\u0435\u0442\u043b\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Simon Vasilyevich Petliura] and in January 1919, \u00ab\u0420\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0447\u0435-\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u041a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [The Red Army] launched an operation against \u00ab\u041f\u0435\u0442\u043b\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> and after many days of fighting, \u00ab\u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span> \u0432\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0432 \u041a\u0438<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [red troops entered Kiev].<\/p>\n
