Well, it\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u0444\u0435\u0432\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [February] and the weather is absolutely dreary. All around me – \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043d\u0435\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [snow] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0443\u0433\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [snow drifts] and freezing temperatures. So all I want to write about is tropical climes, but Russia isn\u2019t famous for those. So instead, I\u2019m going to talk about \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [astronomy].<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0421\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [at first] I thought about simply giving translations for the cool astronomy words, such as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0437\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [a supernova] as well as point out that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0423\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Uranus] sounds so much cooler in Russian (sort of like \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [hooray] and not at all like what it sounds like in English). But that\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [pretty boring].<\/p>\n

The inspiration came from a passage in the Lennart Dahlgren\u2019s book Despite Absurdity: How I Conquered Russia While It Conquered Me. In a chapter titled \u201cWestern Logic\u201d, Dahlgren points out that<\/p>\n

[Most Russians are conversant in music and literature and thus frequently play upon the cultural context.]<\/p>\n

While Mr. Dahlgren talks about failure of the Western logic in business negotiations, his \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0431\u043b\u044e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [astute observation] can be applied to so many other situations.<\/p>\n

And so, let\u2019s roll. Or as the song goes \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u043d <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043b <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b\u0438, <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043c\u0430\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u043b <\/strong>\u0440\u0443\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [he said \u201clet\u2019s go\u201d and waved his hand]. The \u201che\u201d is, of course, Yuri Gagarin who, on April 12, 1961 said the historic \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0443, <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [well, let\u2019s go!] at the start of the Vostok 1 rocket. This is a must-know phrase<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> has \u201cstar\u201d in it, how about starting with \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [star]<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0412\u0435\u0434\u044c \u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0437\u0432\u0451<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u044b \u0437\u0430\u0436\u0438\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442 – \u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0442 – \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c \u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e?\u00bb<\/strong> [If stars are lit nightly, then someone out there needs it] – who knew a proletarian poet who wrote such lines as \u201cThe Communist Party and Lenin are twins and brothers!\u201d could be so romantic. Seriously though, this simple line made me fall in love with Vladimir Mayakovski and his poetry back in high school.<\/p>\n

Mayakovski wrote well before Soviet Union became \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b <\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [ahead of the rest of the planet in space rockets]. So when things really started happening in the 1960s – first satellite, first manned flight, first space walk, there was a large number of great songs that became a part of the aforementioned \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0441\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [cultural context].<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll hear this phrase most often as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0438\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [ironic commentary] to \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0441\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [being blindly and mindlessly patriotic<\/a>].<\/p>\n

Catchy tunes<\/a> promised that in no time \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u0445 <\/strong>\u0434\u0430\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0445 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0443\u0442\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0434\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [our footprints will remain on the dusty trails of the faraway planets] while \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u0442 <\/strong>\u044f<\/span><\/strong>\u0431\u043b\u043e\u043d\u0438 <\/strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [apple trees will blossom on Mars<\/a>].<\/p>\n

These two lines are emblems of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0441\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the romance of the Cosmos] of that era as well as handy phrases to describe irrational exuberance of any kind.<\/p>\n

One such \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [dream] was that we will find \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0443\u043c\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [intelligent life] on other planets. Even some \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [astronomers] believed in life on \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b <\/strong>\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [terrestrial planets] in solar systems nearest to us, including \u00ab<\/strong>\u0422\u0430<\/span>\u0443 <\/strong>\u041a\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Tau Ceti] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u042d\u043f\u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u043d <\/strong>\u042d\u0440\u0438\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Epsilon Eridani]. And that\u2019s how come we have \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0422\u0430<\/span>\u0443-<\/strong>\u041a\u0438\u0442\u0435<\/span> <\/strong>\u0443\u0441\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044c\u044f <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [the conditions on Tau Ceti are different] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430 <\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u0443\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043c <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0441\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0442\u044c\u043c\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the darkness of space is all around us]. Both are from awesome songs<\/a> by Vladimir Visotsky<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Soviet children, particularly boys, were raised to be \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044b <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u0436\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [spaceship captains<\/a>]. One of the most popular lullabies<\/a> of the time had such lines as \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0438 <\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043c\u0430\u0433\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0442\u0430\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0445 <\/strong>\u0440\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [no geomagnetic storm will crush such boys] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430\u044e-<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0439, <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0437\u0432\u0451<\/span>\u0437\u0434 <\/strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [rockabye, keep growing up and to the stars you\u2019ll fly].<\/p>\n
