Today we are going to talk about irregular plural nouns. Judging from the comments, we have readers of all levels, so I will do a brief review. Masculine nouns, like \u00ab\u0447\u0435\u043c\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [suitcase] or \u00ab\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [dictionary], and feminine nouns, like \u00ab\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [cat] or \u00ab\u0442\u0430\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [customs office] or even \u00ab\u0442\u0435\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [notebook] pluralize with \u00ab\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> or \u00ab\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> depending on whether the noun is hard or soft. Here is how these nouns pluralize:<\/p>\n Neuter nouns, on the other hand, are a bit different. Let’s look at two: \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [government] and \u00ab\u0437\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [building]. These nouns pluralize with \u00ab\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> or \u00ab\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>, depending on whether the ending is hard or soft.<\/p>\n So far, not too bad. But not all nouns follow these rules. There is a group of nouns, all masculine (I have not explicitly read that all nouns of this type are masculine, but I cannot think of any that are not) that pluralize with the letter \u00ab\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> and a stressed ending. Here is a brief list of some such nouns.<\/p>\n I remember this one because of \u00ab\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0431\u0438\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u044f \u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u0430 \u041d\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Vladimir Nabokov’s autobiography]: the Russian title is \u00ab\u0414\u0440\u0443\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0435 \u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Other Shores].<\/p>\n That is not by any means an exhaustive list, so if you can think of any more examples, please do not hesitate to write them in a comment.<\/p>\n I think it would beneficial to do grammar on this blog once a week, so do you have any requests for grammatical concepts?
