Today is the day when Russian men \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u044e<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u0434\u0438\u0444\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0431\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [sing praises] to Russian women. And Russian women, congratulating each other \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0445 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in poetry and prose], not so jokingly wish for the day to end. For today, March 8th<\/sup>, Russians celebrate \u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [International Women\u2019s Day].<\/p>\n

The whole world knows that Russian women are \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [beauties]. What they don\u2019t know is that Russian woman is also \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430, <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0441\u043e\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430, <\/strong>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0441\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [an outstanding student, a member of the Komsomol youth organization, an athlete]. This famous phrase, from a Soviet-era movie \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u0430\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [The (female) prisoner of the Caucasus] means \u201can ideal woman\u201d, the one who succeeds in everything she undertakes and in spite of anything thrown at her.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly the kind of woman who \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442, \u0432 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0449\u0443\u044e \u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0431\u0443 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u0434\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [will stop a galloping horse, will enter a burning house]. This is a phrase that all Russian men know even those who have never read Nekrasov\u2019s famous poem.<\/p>\n

Back to the 8th<\/sup> of March\u2026 This is the day when children give hand-made cards to their mothers while husbands attempt to both clean the house and cook dinner while watching the kids. Then the men give up and run out for some \u00ab<\/strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [flowers], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [trinkets] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0448\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a box of chocolates].<\/p>\n

And women try to get a break from \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [household chores] if for just a few hours. But that almost never happens. 8th<\/sup> of March is a federal holiday in Russia and a day off. So friends and family get together in the afternoon to \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [celebrate the occasion]. Naturally, all the cooking and much of the cleaning are done by women.<\/p>\n

Of course, the first toast at the table is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0434\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [to the beautiful ladies]. But by the end of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [soiree] men are frequently too \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0448\u043e\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [drunk] to even help get the dishes to the sink. \u00ab<\/strong>\u041b\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0448\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [lit: the better half, wife] is left to do all the cleanup.<\/p>\n

To Russian men\u2019s credit, they do know of their shortcomings. They also have largely theoretical knowledge of how tough life is for their \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. life partners, wives and girlfriends]. They understand that Russian women are the glue that holds Russian society together and gives it strength to continue on. And they do it with virtually no recognition of their hard work.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite Russian \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [satirists], Mikhail Zhvanetski, once said \u00ab\u0412\u043e\u0441\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043c\u0443\u0436\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430 \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0435\u0442 \u0437\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0435, \u043f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0445\u043e \u043d\u0435\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0449\u0435\u0439 \u0448\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0443.\u00bb<\/strong> [A well-brought up man will never correct a woman improperly carrying a railroad tie.]<\/p>\n

He also, by the way, described the conspicuous absence of women in Russian politics in his snappy \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0447\u0435\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u0441\u0435 \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0445\u043e\u0442\u044f<\/span>\u0442 \u0432 \u043f\u0430\u0440\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442?! \u0412\u0435\u0434\u044c \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0436\u0435 \u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044b, \u043a\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u044b, \u043d\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b… <\/strong>\u0422\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span> \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0441 \u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0439…\u00bb<\/strong> [Why do they (women) still want to be in the Parlament?! After all, there are restaurants, clubs, bars\u2026 One can go there with a woman\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, most foreigners consider beauty to be the main attribute of a Russian woman. Yet beauty is not what sets Russian women apart. Nor is it their smarts, education, modesty or subservience (unbelievable, but some men still look for this quality in their wives). Above all, Russian women are infinitely patient and resilient, much like the country they live in.<\/p>\n

So when you lift your glass today, let this toast guide you:<\/p>\n
