But trying to explain the complicated rules of choosing between perfective and imperfective verbs is a whole different matter. And that\u2019s why I was thrilled when, reading through the comments, I found Maria. She is a native speaker of Russian and a trained linguist. Is such simplicity possible? Not so fast! In Russian, the absence of more verbal tenses, as in English or say, Italian, is partially compensated by aspectual forms. Verbal aspect is one of the most difficult topics in Russian grammar, especially for non-native speakers. And that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re going to be talking about in today\u2019s post.<\/p>\n<p>In dictionaries, verbs are usually in the imperfective form. For these the aspect is determined contextually. Examples include <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [to marry],<strong> \u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to order], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to put to death], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0437\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to influence], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to use].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perfective verbs are used to describe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An action that leads to a specific result:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>\u00ab\u041f\u0440\u0438\u0448\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong> \u0437\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>. <em>\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u043b<\/em> \u0433\u043b\u0443\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043d\u0435\u0433 \u0438 <em>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043b<\/em> \u0434\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438, \u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>, \u0434\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0438.\u00bb <\/strong>[Winter came. Imperfective verbs have compound form (will + infinitive or will be V+ing) &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443 \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>. Perfective verbs\u2019 future tense is just one word &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044e\u00bb<\/strong>. Note that in English both forms are translated as \u201cshall\/will + infinitive\u201d &#8211; \u201cwill do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And that is all there is to verbal aspects&#8230; for today.
