\u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u043e <\/strong>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0451<\/span>\u043c\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u043a <\/strong>\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c <\/strong>\u0431\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [But let\u2019s get back to business; lit. – let\u2019s get back to our rams]. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Fool\u2019s Day] is also known as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Day of Laughter]. Russians celebrate it with pranks and Russian media – with fake news, press releases and promotions. In short, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f, <\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [everyone spoofs any way they can].<\/p>\n

The verb \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> means \u201cto be pinned\u201d, but \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> means \u201cto prank\u201d or \u201cto have fun\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hence one of the meanings of the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> is \u201ca prank\u201d:<\/p>\n

The least imaginative prank I can think of is to tell someone \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443 <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u0441\u043f\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [your back is all white]. I\u2019m not 100% sure why people say this, but I think the story goes something like this:<\/p>\n

The walls in old Soviet Union administrative offices, government buildings, schools, barracks and even staircases and hallways in apartment buildings were painted only to a certain height (usually between waist and shoulder height). Anything higher than that was not painted, but whitewashed using \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [lime paste]. So if you leaned against a wall, you would likely get the dry chalky lime powder all over your back.<\/p>\n

As I said, I think it\u2019s one of the least funny of the \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0448\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [April Fool\u2019s jokes] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u0433\u0440\u044b\u0448\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [April Fool\u2019s pranks]. Another one would be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443 <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u0448\u043d\u0443\u0440\u043a\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0432\u044f\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [your shoelaces are untied].<\/p>\n

The key to a good April Fool\u2019s joke is it should be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [inoffensive], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0434\u043e\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [believable] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [without consequences]. A great April Fool\u2019s joke, on the other hand, will be all that plus \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [fresh] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0448\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [funny]. (So the joke on the picture, although funny, is not very good).<\/p>\n
