It made headlines at the time and a year later, people are still talking about it. Why? Read on to find out.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

He and a Polish delegation were going to take part in a commemoration of \u00ab\u041a\u0430\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [the Katyn massacre]. The entire delegation was aboard one plane, \u00ab\u0422\u0443-154\u00bb<\/strong> [a Tupulev Tu-154].<\/p>\n

In the airport where they were supposed to land, there was \u00ab\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0442\u0443\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [heavy fog]. Because of this, the plane could not land and crashed. \u00ab\u0412\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f<\/span>\u0442 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0430\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432 \u0438 \u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c \u0447\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432 \u044d\u043a\u0438\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438.\u00bb<\/strong> [Eighty-nine passengers and seven crew members died.] \u00ab\u0412 \u0438\u0445 \u0447\u0438\u0441\u043b\u0435<\/span> \u2014 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0438\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442 \u041f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0438, \u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u0436\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u0447\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u0441\u0451 \u0432\u044b\u0448\u0435\u0435 \u0432\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435.\u00bb<\/strong> [Among them were the president of Poland, his wife, and almost all of the military high command.]<\/p>\n

Of course, this was a terribly tragic event and Poles mourned in Warsaw that evening. (There were some very moving pictures of a candlelight vigil in Warsaw on the BBC website.) But very soon after, people started to question what happened and ask who was at fault. Some said (and still say): \u00ab\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f \u0432\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Russia is guilty]. Others said it was simply an accident. There was an investigation. \u00ab\u041f\u043e \u0440\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043c \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f, \u0432\u0441\u0435 \u0441\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044b \u0441\u0430\u043c\u043e\u043b\u0451\u0442\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043b\u0438 \u043d\u043e\u0440\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e.\u00bb<\/strong> [According to the investigation, all the airplane’s systems were working fine.]<\/p>\n

The whole event is controversial–I’ve heard that some Poles reject the investigation’s findings. For what it’s worth, I attended \u00ab\u0441\u0435\u043c\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0440 \u0432 \u041e<\/span>\u043a\u0441\u0444\u043e\u0440\u0434\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a seminar in Oxford] at which Norman Davies, a renowned historian, said that he thinks the whole thing was just an unfortunate accident.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u0430\u0432\u0438\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [After the air crash], Poland held elections for a new president. The man who won is named Bronislaw Komorowski and I’ve heard that his detractors have nicknamed him Komoruski because of his (alleged) sympathies towards Russia.
