The focus of this post will be <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0441 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [prefixed verbs of motion].\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u041e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Formation]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0413\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0441 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [prefixed verbs of motion] are formed by adding <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [prefixes] to already existing verbs of motion. The unidirectional verb will be perfective, and the multidirectional will be imperfective. Let us look at a few <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [examples].<\/p>\n<p>With the verbs <strong>\u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0438\u0434\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to go by foot], the first one is multidirectional and the second is unidirectional. If we add the prefix <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438-\u00bb<\/strong>, which gives the meaning of arrival, the verb pair becomes <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to arrive by foot]. Just like most other Russian verbs, the first one in this pair is imperfective, and the second is perfective. Also, we can see that <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0434\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> changes when a prefix is added to it. I will discuss such exceptions further in Part 2 of this post.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are some of the prefixes? We already know <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438-\u00bb<\/strong>, but there are many more. Here are some prefixes that you will encounter, along with prepositions with which they are used.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438- + \u0432\/\u043d\u0430; \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: arriving<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0443- + \u0432\/\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0442\u043e; \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>; \u0438\u0437\/\u0441 \u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: leaving, departing<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0432- + \u0432\/\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: into<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0432\u044b- + \u0432\/\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0442\u043e; \u0438\u0437\/\u0441 \u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: out of<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0434- + \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\/\u0447\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: approaching<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0442- + \u043e\u0442 \u043a\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\/\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: moving away from<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0437-, \u0432\u0441-, \u0432\u043e\u0437-, \u0432\u043e\u0441-\u00bb<\/strong>: moving up<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0441- + \u0441 \u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: moving down<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0437\u0430- + \u043a \u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>; \u0432\/\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: dropping by, stopping in<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0437\u0430- + \u0437\u0430 \u043a\u0435\u043c\/\u0447\u0435\u043c\u00bb<\/strong>: picking someone up, getting something<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435- + \u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: movement across<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e- + \u0432\/\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0442\u043e; \u043a \u0447\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: getting somewhere<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e- \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: passing something unintentionally<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e- + \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u043e \u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: going past<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e- + \u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: passing through<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e- + \u043f\u043e \u0447\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: moving along something<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0434\u043e- + \u0434\u043e \u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: moving as far as, reaching something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both <strong>\u00ab\u0441-\u00bb<\/strong> and <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435-\u00bb<\/strong> are associated with some idiomatic expressions. <strong>\u00ab\u0421\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u0441 \u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to lose one&#8217;s mind] and <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u043a\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>-\u0442\u043e \u0441 \u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to drive someone crazy] are important expressions to know. <strong>\u00ab\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0443\u044e \u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [to change jobs] and <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0435\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to move] are also important (and in the case of changing jobs, common due to the current economic crisis).<\/p>\n<p><em>There is so much to talk about when it comes to <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0441 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [prefixed verbs of motion], so I am not nearly finished.
