You can now watch some of the iconic Russian movies online for free at Mosfilm\u2019s official YouTube <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/mosfilm\">channel<\/a>. Even better, many movies are digitally restored and subtitled in English.<\/p>\n<p>More good news is that today\u2019s post is for the arm-chair travelers in all of us. How would you like to go <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [on a walk around Moscow]? I would love it very much and that\u2019s what I did earlier today. Ok, well, it was more of a virtual stroll thanks to a few <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [amateur videos] on the same YouTube. And I want to share this experience with you.<\/p>\n<p>None of these videos are about Moscow\u2019s <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [places of interest]. Sure, these places are visited and filmed, but generally stay in the background. The main focus is on street scenes, the typical ebb and flow of the Moscow city life.<\/p>\n<p>The video opens up with some people in the tour group <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u044f\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [feeding the pigeons]. Russians have some mixed feelings when it comes to pigeons. For the most part, they are seen as a nuisance since they leave their droppings everywhere. But at the same time, pigeons are <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [symbols of peace and happiness].<\/p>\n<p>For some reason the tour group goes to see <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430 \u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u041e\u043a\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u044c\u00bb\u00bb<\/strong> [the confectionary factory \u201cRed October\u201d]. I mean, last time I was in Moscow, I went by it myself. So I guess I\u2019m not the only one who\u2019s crazy about Russian chocolate. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041e\u0431\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0448\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434!\u00bb<\/strong> [I love black porous chocolate!]<\/p>\n<p>The Red October factory is the oldest continuously running candy factory in Russia, in operation since 1851. The red brick building on the embankment that you see in the video now houses the museum and also <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0435\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u0448\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0443\u0447\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [production facility for hand-made chocolates]. Yum!<\/p>\n<p>One thing you might notice in the video is that most cars on Moscow\u2019s roads are <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[foreign-made and imported car]<strong>.<\/strong> Don\u2019t think for a second that most Russians drive <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438\u00bb,<\/strong> whether imported or assembled in the country. Half of all cars on the Russian roads are <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0436\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u043c\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [used domestically-produced vehicles].<\/p>\n<p>Another car-related episode in the video is an oddly parked car that\u2019s taking half the sidewalk. As more and more Russians get behind the wheel, large cities experience <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0431\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u043e\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [acute problems with parking]. There are not enough convenient and free parking spaces. So <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [drivers] carve them out whenever they can (and some places where they really-really can\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p>Next in the video is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0425\u0440\u0430\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0421\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cathedral_of_Christ_the_Saviour\">Cathedral of Christ the Savior<\/a>]. This enormous cathedral, the largest in Russia, has a fascinating history. You can read all about it on Wikipedia, but let\u2019s just say that first it was a cathedral, then &#8211; a giant swimming pool and finally &#8211; a cathedral again.<\/p>\n<p>From the pedestrian bridge to the Cathedral there\u2019s a great view onto a much-maligned statue of Peter the Great by sculptor <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0417\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0431 <\/strong><strong>\u0426\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Zurab Tsereteli]. If you\u2019re on a quest to see \u201cthe biggest\u201d and \u201cthe mostest\u201d of all things in Russia, make sure to take lots of pictures. This is the tallest statue in Russia. It is also officially one of the world\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/members.virtualtourist.com\/vt\/t\/1c7\/\">ugliest structures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to the end of the video we see the group intently looking onto something on the roof of a building. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0422\u0443\u0440-<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [The tour-guide] is pointing to it and starting to talk into his <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [bull horn] also known (rudely) as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> from the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to yap or to lie]. Accidentally, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0424<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> is also a brand name of a cell phone carrier and appears on a few signs throughout this video.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, there\u2019s a banner on the roof that reads <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0414\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0438\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>, <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0443\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u0442\u0435\u0441\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [Dear Moscovites, don\u2019t be scared of the guests of the capital city]. Many Moscovites have this fear of non-natives who are seen as gold-diggers of the sort, snagging all the good jobs, affordable housing, straining city services and raising crime rates. Yet it seems that Moscow depends heavily on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u0442\u0435\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [guest workers] for all its construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that amazed me when I was in Moscow last time and that comes through in this video as well as the amount of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [advertising] on the streets. Banners, signs, posters and billboards of all sorts are abundant here, including in the city center, frequently dwarfing some of the historical landmarks (as in the middle of this <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/s1ODo_ofE94\">Part 2 video<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if Moscovites have become immune to these ads just like they used to be immune to all the <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443 &#8211; <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0438\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [Peace to the World] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u041a\u043e\u043c\u043c\u0443\u043d\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Glory to the Communist Party] billboards of the old Soviet days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve got good news and more good news so which one do you want to hear first?
