If you answered <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> (do I really need to translate this one?) to all of the above, then this is the post for you.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago I wrote a couple of posts about some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/russian-fairy-tales-from-a-to-z-part-1\/\">Russian fairy tale<\/a> creatures. <strong>\u00ab\u0412 \u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Particularly], I said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Russian fairy tale land is located <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [across thrice-nine lands] in the mythical <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0443\u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Lookomorie].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I then analyzed the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0443\u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> and concluded that pretty much any bow-shaped<strong> \u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [bay] could be it. That\u2019s just not specific enough! But I\u2019ll tell you more, my <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [explanation] of the whereabouts of Lookomorie, while <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0435\u043e\u0440\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[correct in theory], is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [inaccurate in practice].<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, there exists an actual <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/visualrian.ru\/images\/large\/884650\">Fairy Tale Map of Russia<\/a>] <em>(thank you, Bob, for the tip off)<\/em>. Better yet, it is published as a cool and interactive <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u0444\u043e\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [infographics]. The not so good news is that it\u2019s available only in Russian. So let me go ahead and highlight some of the more quirky info:<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, one of the most interesting fairy tale characters, \u00ab\u0411\u0430\u0431\u0430 \u042f\u0433\u0430\u00bb, the old witch Baba Yaga, hails from a small <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [village] in Yaroslavskiy Province. At the same time, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430-<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [Ivan the Fool] found his home in a national park in Arkhangelski Province.<\/p>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t it be <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[the other way around]? Shouldn\u2019t Baba Yaga live in a national park, given her habit of living alone and away from others? And shouldn\u2019t Ivan live in a small village instead? The map explains that the park <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [laid claim to] Ivan some years ago and now hosts annual <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> festivals.<\/p>\n<p>This word is an interesting one. It\u2019s a good example of how suffixes add multiple layers of meaning and amazing flexibility to Russian words.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Suffix <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> is an adjective suffix that turns a noun into an adjective, as in words <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [coastal], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [house], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [rose].<\/li>\n<li>Suffix <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> augments a noun, as in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [big fellow], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [large animal], etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> means tomfoolery of epic proportions. It\u2019s probably a festival where you are expected to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [clown around] and maybe even <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0434\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [make fool of someone], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [play dumb] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [to play fool].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The itinerant <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> ran away from home in the town of Ulyanovsk, at least according to some researchers. Which makes him <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [a fellow countryman] with Ulyanovsk\u2019s other native son, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0440 <\/strong><strong>\u0418\u043b\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447 <\/strong><strong>\u0423\u043b\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov] aka <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0440 <\/strong><strong>\u041b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Vladimir Lenin]. Which might explain this highly unusual sculpture that used to grace a factory in the Ukrainian city of Odessa.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have their share of squabbles over some critical issues, such as natural gas deliveries. And since fairy tale creatures are important cultural resources (for example, for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [branding] and future merchandizing) they presented another possibility for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0444\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [conflict].<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, Ukrainians compiled their own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/russia\/8481095\/Russia-and-Ukraine-squabble-over-fairytale-characters.html\">fairy tale map<\/a> which claims some of the same characters as the Russian map &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [Kolobok], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u043b\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0446\u00bb<\/strong> [Ilya Murometz], and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0420<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0431\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the Speckled Hen].<\/p>\n<p>As the saying goes, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [history will judge] who\u2019s right and who\u2019s got to build a museum or a monument first.
