What was I so busy with you might ask. Well, I was <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">wasting time<\/span> doing research on YouTube. All those hours of watching and yes, singing, Russian hits from late 80\u2019s and early 90\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0am no <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043b\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [audiophile]. Instead, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [what matters to me] when I listen to these old songs is not so much their <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [lyrics and music], but <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043c\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[recollections] they stir up. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0442, <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Here goes nostalgia again].<\/p>\n<p>This post is not about the short history of late-Soviet and early post-Soviet music. Instead, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u044d\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [it\u2019s more about something personal].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PhbNyasaoJw\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PhbNyasaoJw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ok, so I was too young to remember this song by <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0418\u0410 <\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [pop-group Verasi] when it first came out. But it remained hugely popular for a long time. So I&#8217;d say that&#8217;s probably my earliest musical memory, hearing the song about <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [robin] on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [the Mayak radio station].\u00a0 <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [Lighthouse] was the official \u201cvoice of socialism\u201d radio station, broadcasting over the entire Soviet Union. Even if you\u2019ve never heard of this radio station before, you mostly likely have heard its official <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0437\u044b\u0432\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/h02pYrX_aVs\">call sign<\/a>]. By the way, you can still listen to this radio station <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moskva.fm\/stations\/FM_103.4\/20110704\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1sBFLcpmVpE\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1sBFLcpmVpE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one reminds me of that hazy period when old-style <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0446\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [dance floor] were getting renamed <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0438\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [discos], but not everywhere at the same time. So when I was at <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [sanatorium] with parents, we went <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [to dance]. But at <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0435\u0440\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [summer camp] there were already <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0438\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [discotheques] even thought the songs were the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n3W8jc3Ikhw\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n3W8jc3Ikhw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a child, I could not for the life of mine understand why it is such an unattainable goal to find a man <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e\u0431 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u043b, <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [who wouldn\u2019t smoke, drink and would always bring flowers]. Turns out, this is one of the <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0431\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [eternal problems] that has <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ldKOWpCwVwM\">yet to be solved<\/a> by many (since there\u2019s only one <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/_OFOPd6pgjI\">Putin<\/a>, but that\u2019s from a different era).<\/p>\n<p>The words to these songs are both remarkably ridiculous and heart-warming in their lack of sophistication. How can you not feel <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0438\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e \u043d\u0430 \u0431\u0430\u043b\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0435. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042d<\/span>\u0442\u043e &#8211; \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442. \u042f \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e \u0436\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u042f\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0435. \u041d\u0430 \u042f\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0435 \u0431\u0430\u043b\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u043a \u043d\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [I play balalaika. It\u2019s the most Russian instrument. I dream of living on Jamaica. There are no balalaikas on Jamaica]. Or how about the profound truth of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0411\u0443\u0445\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0442\u0435\u0440, <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0443\u0445\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0442\u0435\u0440. <\/strong><strong>\u0412\u043e\u0442 \u043e\u043d \u043a\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439, \u0442\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439. \u0410 \u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435 \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0434\u0443\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Accountant, my darling accountant. Happiness will come if the soul is at peace.]<\/p>\n<p>BTW, the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0431\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> means both \u201ccombination\u201d as in alpha-numeric combination for a password and \u201ca slip\u201d as in a type of undergarment. And that was probably the first all-girls band too.<\/p>\n<p>Next, logically, would be the first boy band (ok, the first with a major <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [sex appeal]).
