Have you done it yet? If not, then what are you waiting for; the summer (in the Northern Hemisphere) is almost over. As the saying goes, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0432\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0451<\/span>\u0434!\u00bb<\/strong> [get to it!] Because next thing you know, it will be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [winter sweeps in] (if you know where this line is from, leave a comment).<\/p>\n

So this is going to be another \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e <\/strong>\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [personal] post. But I promise lots of vocabulary.<\/p>\n

While the length of Russia\u2019s coastline is nearly twice the length of its land boundaries, much of it lays \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u043c <\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [above Arctic Circle]. Growing up, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [a beach trip] meant a quick ride across Volga on \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [a ferry] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Raketa]. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0420\u0430\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> wasn\u2019t exactly a real rocket, but a type of a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u044f\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [hydrofoil boat].<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [A trip to the sea] was a luxury for most since it was difficult to obtain \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0443\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [a voucher for a stay at a resort]. But once, when I was little, we did go \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0427\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [to the Black Sea] albeit as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0438\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. savages]. The phrase \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0434\u0438\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0451<\/span>\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> really means a DIY sort of vacation booked without a travel agent.<\/p>\n

Ah, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [happy childhood], when travelling 900 miles nonstop in \u00ab<\/strong>\u0417\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0446\u00bb<\/strong> [Zaporozhets, a cheap Soviet subcompact car with a 27hp engine] seemed fun and warm Pepsi, bought at a market in \u00ab<\/strong>\u0421\u0443\u0445\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Sukhumi, nowadays the capital of the Abkhazia region], tasted delicious\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But enough reminiscing. So what do you do when you go on a sea-side vacation? Do you sleep \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [until noon] or do you get up early to watch \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0434 <\/strong>\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [sunrise]? What do you prefer – \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [walks on the beach] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043b\u0435\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [laying down and sunning yourself]? Are you a fan of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [shingle beach] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0441\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436\u00bb <\/strong>[sandy beach]?<\/p>\n

Fortunately, most beaches, even the river and lake ones, offer some exciting diversions – \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0433\u0438\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0446\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [jet skiing], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0435\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [snorkeling], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [parasail], not to mention \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u044b\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [fishing].<\/p>\n

Besides, there\u2019s always an option of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0441\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0440 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [touring local places of interest]. On my last trip I did just that since there was \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0430\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [a lighthouse] nearby and a beautiful wetlands \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [nature preserve].<\/p>\n

Finally, no trip to a beach (or anywhere else for that matter) is complete without some \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0443\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [souvenirs] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0446\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [knickknacks also known as tchotchke]. In case you\u2019re wondering, it\u2019s the \u201ctchotchke\u201d that was borrowed from \u00ab<\/strong>\u0446\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong>, not the other way around.<\/p>\n

By the way, one of the delightfully interesting Russian words is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0446\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [to mollycoddle]. This can be applied to both animate and inanimate objects as in:<\/p>\n
