Wrapped up in a thrilling conversation in Russian (this also goes for in Russia<\/em>) and feeling rather impressed with what someone else has just said, but at a loss for concrete words to express such notions, one does not always know what to say. Of course, you could always make the classical comment of \u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span>!\u00bb<\/strong> [good!], but isn’t that a little too boring, a little too \u2018hey, I’ve just finished studying a year of Russian for beginners and I know how to say that and \u00ab\u0441 1989 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430 \u044f \u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0435 \u043d\u0435 \u044f\u0432\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u044e\u0441\u044c \u0447\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043c \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u0438 \u043f\u043e \u043e\u0447\u0435\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u043c \u043e\u0431\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong>‘ [since 1989 I am no longer a member of the party because of obvious circumstances]? <\/em>Why not try to spice up the chat with\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [excellent!] or \u00ab\u043a\u0430\u043a \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e!\u00bb <\/strong>[how interesting!]. You could also go a little bit colloquial and say something like \u00ab\u0437\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [wonderful!] (but make sure you don’t put the stress on the second o<\/strong>, and end up saying \u00ab\u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong>, which is an informal way of saying hello. Especially in Siberia, said Dostoevsky back in 1855), or \u00ab\u043a\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043d\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018awesome!’] (you could also just shorten it to \u00ab\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441!\u00bb <\/strong>[\u2018awesomeness’]), and from there the road isn’t far to the well-known \u00ab\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0440!\u00bb<\/strong> [super!]. But we’re here to learn something new, now aren’t we? How about splashing and dashing the useful phrase of \u00ab\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> around oneself in Russian discussions?<\/p>\n

Thus we’ve come to the conclusion that the fascinating phrase \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span><\/strong>\u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span><\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>, which should be translated as \u2018nothing to oneself’<\/em> in English actually means ‘not bad; pretty good; pretty well’,<\/em> and is a useful comment to make when something someone says impresses you. But in what kind of situations would that be really appropriate? Let’s learn from a couple of examples:<\/p>\n

– \u00ab\u0412\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435 \u044f \u043d\u0430\u0448\u0451<\/span>\u043b 5000 (\u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447) \u0440\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439, \u0438 \u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0446-\u0442\u043e \u0443\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b, \u043a\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434 \u043d\u0430 \u0442\u043e\u0439 \u0431\u0443\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u0435 – \u0425\u0430\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0441\u043a!\u00bb <\/strong>[Yesterday I found 5000 rubles on the street, and finally I found out what town is on that bill – Khabarovsk!]<\/p>\n
