This is Part 2 of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/prefixed-verbs-of-motion-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a>. Today, I will be writing about <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0441 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [prefixed verbs of motion]. Last time, we talked about the actual prefixes. Today, I will discuss how some verbs of motion change when prefixed, in addition to two prefixes that can function a bit differently from the others.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You already know from the last post that the verb \u00ab\u0438\u0434\u0442\u0438\u00bb changes when prefixed: it becomes <strong>\u00ab-\u0439\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong>, as in <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, and so on. Three other verbs have changes when they have prefixes added.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to go by vehicle] becomes <strong>\u00ab-\u0435\u0437\u0436\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>: <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0435\u0437\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to arrive by vehicle], <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0434\u044a\u0435\u0437\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to approach by vehicle], <strong>\u00ab\u0434\u043e\u0435\u0437\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to go up to by vehicle]<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to swim] becomes <strong>\u00ab-\u043f\u043b\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>: <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043b\u044b\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to arrive by swimming], <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u043f\u043b\u044b\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to swim away]<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to run] has a stress change when conjugated with a prefix. Though it is <strong>\u00ab\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [I run], it becomes <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0431\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [I run <em>(with an implied meaning of arrival)<\/em>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The prefix <strong>\u00ab\u0441-\u00bb<\/strong> can mean movement down from. However, it also has another meaning when used with unprefixed multidirectional verbs of motion. It indicates quick motion somewhere and back. <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [For example], with the verb <strong>\u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to go by foot], it combines to form <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>. <em>Note that this is a perfective verb.<\/em> Some example sentences are: <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> \u0441\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0434\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0437\u0430 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [She ran home for her money]. This implies that she went and is now back. <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0441\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u043c\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d.\u00bb<\/strong> [He will run to the store.] This implies that he will go there quickly and then come back.<\/p>\n<p>The prefix <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e-\u00bb<\/strong> has a similar function when combined with a unidrectional imperfective verb of motion. <strong>\u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> is a perfective verb that means to set off for a one-way trip. <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0448\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u0432 \u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0443.\u00bb<\/strong> [They set off for the library.]<\/p>\n<p>With all these verbs of motion, it is important to discuss modes of transportation. Use <strong>\u00ab\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> + prepositional case to describe what means of transportation used to go somewhere, such as <strong>\u00ab\u042f <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u043b\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0430\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [I went by car].<\/p>\n<p><em>I hope this clears up any confusion about prefixed verbs of motion.
