This is the weather forecast for next week in my corner (read \u2018igloo’<\/a>) of the planet Earth. In Russia igloo is \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0443\u00bb<\/a><\/strong>. This is not a Russian word, even though Russia is a cold country. One knows that some words are not Russian words by the way they’re written. If a word ends on an \u00ab\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> but isn’t plural, like for example \u00ab\u0442\u0430\u043a\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [taxi], then that’s a clear sign of that its etymology <\/a>isn’t Slavic. Or when a word ends on \u00ab\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>, as if it was a classic neuter, but then it doesn’t change in different cases, like \u00ab\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0[subway], and you know you’ve met one of them \u2018foreigners’ in the Russian language. This goes for \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0433\u043b\u0443\u00bb<\/strong>, which doesn’t change in any of the cases.<\/em><\/p>\n

I have sent out a wish to \u00ab\u0414\u0435\u0434 \u041c\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> this year about the only thing I want for \u00ab\u041d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0413\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/a> <\/strong>(since in Russia they celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January, and then without any gifts, and as they say – when in Rome…<\/em>). I want \u044d\u0442\u0438\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c<\/strong> [an etymological dictionary]. It’s the only thing I don’t have in my life, and the only thing I can honestly say that I truly, deeply, really need<\/em>. If I had such a dictionary then I could look up all sorts of words and find out where they came from and how they changed through the centuries<\/a> and I’m sure that then, right then, with that dictionary, I would be happy. And my life would be fulfilled \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
