Guys, you rock!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A while ago one of the blog readers, Bob, e-mailed me the infographics you see at the top of the post. Honestly, while I really liked the picture, I already had a bunch of posts lined up and decided <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u043b\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0433\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0449\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [to shelf the article].<\/p>\n<p>Then a few days ago I picked up a copy of Jane McGonigal\u2019s \u201cReality Is Broken\u201d <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [at a local library]. <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u0442\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043a\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0433\u0430, \u043a\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [By the way, it\u2019s a great read].<\/p>\n<p>To make the long story short, reading about happiness reminded me of the infographics and led to my asking a question <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0427\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> which I translated as \u201cWhat do you need to be happy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrod brought up an excellent point by asking why I translated it this way instead of \u201cfor happiness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Would <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [word-for-word translation] be the best option here? Or should I use <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [idiomatic translation]? As a non-native speaker (of either Russian or English), how important is it to you to have a translation that is a close formal equivalent even when a more idiomatic form exists? These aren\u2019t just idle questions since your feedback shapes this blog.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the kicker. Did you see the title of the infographics? It\u2019s called \u201cWhat makes Russians happy\u201d. Now, how would you translate this sentence into Russian? Try it now, but don\u2019t peek\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Did you write down your answer? Ok, the way this particular research was announced in Russian media was <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0427\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0432\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f\u00bb.<\/strong> Wow, that\u2019s like totally different, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>The phrase <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0432\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [what\u2019s missing] was translated as \u201cwhat makes\u201d. Why?<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s because Russian language has a lot of phrases that use <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> without sounding negative (at least to the Russian ear):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When making plans &#8211; <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>-\u043b\u0438 \u043d\u0430\u043c \u0432 \u043a\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. Why don\u2019t we go to a movie]<\/li>\n<li>When hurrying to work &#8211; <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0431\u044b \u0430\u0432\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [ lit. Wouldn\u2019t want to miss the bus]<\/li>\n<li>When asking for directions &#8211; <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442\u0435, \u043a\u0430\u043a \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043a \u043c\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u044e \u0438\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. Wouldn\u2019t you tell me how to get to the art museum]<\/li>\n<li>When asking what time it is &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0435, <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0430\u0441?\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. Wouldn\u2019t you know what time it is]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This brings to mind an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/07\/100713122844.htm\">article<\/a> I read last year in one of the glossy magazines. In it one of the researchers is quoted saying<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among Westerners, focusing on one&#8217;s negative feelings tends to impair well-being, but among Russians, that is not the case.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking of well-being and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong>, what do Russians need to be happy? Turns out, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0432\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0433, <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u0449\u0435\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [the majority of respondents need money, love and confidence in the future].<\/p>\n<p>Other answers included<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0442\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [stability] &#8211; I was surprised to see this as a separate answer. Apparently confidence in the future does not imply stability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u043e\u0437\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0430\u043c, <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0434\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Opportunity to live where I want] &#8211; my Russian friends are always surprised at how often I move. Moving to a different town or a different part of the country used to be very difficult and looks like for some people in Russia it remained so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u0432\u0430\u0434\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [square meters] &#8211; are you puzzled? <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0434\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>refers to the problem of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u043b\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0449\u0430\u0434\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [insufficient living space], a common problem since apartments tend to be small.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u043e\u0437\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [opportunity to do what I love] &#8211; this seems to be a problem common in the US as well, at least judging by all the self-help books on the subject of \u201cmaking money doing what you love\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite answer is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0432\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442, <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0449\u0443\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[lit. something is missing, but it doesn\u2019t interfere with the feeling of happiness]. First of all, it\u2019s a wonderful realization that having everything isn\u2019t a prerequisite to being happy.
