I&#8217;m not going to do a history post because there are lots of sites online that do a much better job of it, complete with detailed timeline and analysis. \u00a0Besides, I was just 13 at the time and politics was the last thing on my mind. So what follows is not a historical account or overview, but rather some snippets of was most memorable that year for me personally. There&#8217;s also a <strong>GIVEAWAY<\/strong> announcement at the end of the post, so if you get bored, just scroll all the way down &#8217;til you see it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Also, there are 10 little snippets in this post. I haven&#8217;t decided if I should do 19, 20 or 21 total. <strong>What do you think?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0414<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0447\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [patterned pantyhose] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>[tights] &#8211; It seemed like every girl in Russia had at least one pair of each back then. Women in Russia learned that pantyhose could be <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [damn fine looking]. \u00a0<strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [tights] moved from historical paintings to the streets and changed their owners from dashing early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century military officers to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0438\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [young fashionistas]. A source of pride for their wearers, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0447\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> were not meant to be hidden under <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [long skirts] and hemlines started going up, up and, in case of tights, away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0428<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043f\u0438\u043d\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cbody shaping\u201d workouts] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [bodybuilding] &#8211; there was a popular slogan in the Soviet days &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0443\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [a sound mind in a sound body] slogan. No slogan addressed the shapeliness of the said sound body. Before shaping and bodybuilding came along, Soviet citizens had <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044f\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=elJC4aWcbJM&amp;feature=related\">morning exercises<\/a>] radio and TV broadcasts (slow waving of arms and bending of torsos accompanied by classical music), <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [industrial gymnastics] (slightly higher paced version of the morning gymnastics) and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GTBZDMsDUd0\">aerobics<\/a>] on weekend mornings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [Veronica Castro] &#8211; in 1991 Russians were <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u043d\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u044d\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [glued to TV screens] watching <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0411\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0443\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Ricos_Tambi%C3%A9n_Lloran\">The Rich Also Cry<\/a>]. The title of this <del>Brazilian<\/del>\u00a0Mexican (thank you, Aurea) soap opera has since become a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u044b\u0440\u0430\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [catchphrase]. The show itself became a sensation. Things would come to a standstill not only during Tuesday-Thursday primetime when the new episodes were shown, but also the following mornings when reruns were aired.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u043e\u043c\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [commercial stores] &#8211; early 90s were a weird time. We still had <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>[rationing coupons] on even most basic goods, including sugar, butter, hotdogs, and vodka. The government-owned stores were practically empty (I remember a large self-service seafood store that had just rows upon rows of canned seaweed). Yet new <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, short for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [commercial stores], and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0430\u0440\u044c\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [kiosks] sprouted <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0440\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [like mushrooms after a rain]. They sold an amazing variety of mostly western goods, from Snickers bars and the aforementioned <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0447\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> to Marlboro Lights to electronics to bananas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041f\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [shopping bags] &#8211; these were some of the more affordable things one could buy at a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [kiosk]. I\u2019m talking about fancy laminated shopping bags with rope handles. We, kids, ditched our old ugly <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [schoolbags] for these bags which also served as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [a measure] of one\u2019s coolness (the more colorful or risqu\u00e9 the print on the bag, the better).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [cigarettes] &#8211; even more affordable than shopping bags were imported cigarettes. They were sold in packs or piecemeal, so that middle and high school kids could afford buying just one or two. Buying just a couple of Marlboros at a time had an added bonus &#8211; eliminating the possibility of parents finding a half-finished <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [pack] in your coat pockets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0422\u043e\u043b\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [flea market] &#8211; it became just about the most exciting (and exasperating) place to be on weekends. There were still <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[old women] selling hand-knitted grey <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0443\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [down shawls] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0447\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [old men] peddling rusted tools and various junk. But there were also rows upon rows of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043d\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [suitcase traders] selling every item of underwear, outerwear or shoes imaginable along with pirated video and cassette tapes, low-quality electronics, and lots of newly printed books.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [chicken legs] &#8211; back in the days of the empty stores, chicken was sometimes jokingly referred to as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044f\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [bluebird]. One reason for the moniker &#8211; it was such a rare sight in the government-run grocery stores. Another reason &#8211; chickens, when available, were sold frozen and had bluish tint to their plucked skins. American chicken legs, nicknamed after then-president of the USA, were abundant, relatively cheap, plump and quick to cook.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0438\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [liberalization] &#8211; this was the year of new big words that the whole country had to learn very quickly and suddenly. Liberalization meant that government was no longer going to control prices on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [goods].<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0411\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0415<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin] &#8211; on June 12<sup>th<\/sup>, 1991 Russians voted him to be the first President of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0420\u0421\u0424\u0421\u0420\u00bb<\/strong> [RSFSR, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic]. I was too young to vote or even pay attention to this event. Most adults I knew voted for Yeltsin even though they were extremely skeptical about <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u0440\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>[elections].
