I\u2019ve finished all the hurricane preparedness tasks and tried watching TV, but the endless hurricane warning tickers moving across the screen are annoying. So instead, why don\u2019t we learn some new Russian words.<\/p>\n

Have you lived through a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0445\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [natural disaster]? I lived in Florida for a few years and got a bit familiar with \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [hurricane] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0448\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [tropical storm]. Living in North Carolina taught me about \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [tornado] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0440\u044f\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [earthquake]. And spending last winter in NY gave me a good practice digging out after \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [snow blizzard]. I also have some first-hand experience with \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0441\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [sandstorm].<\/p>\n

In each case, the media stresses out \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0433\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [that it\u2019s important to be prepared]. I then drive to a store to pick up all the missing items along with \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [bottled water], and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [canned food].<\/p>\n

I also try to get some sort of old-fashioned entertainment that requires no electricity, such as \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0438<\/span><\/strong>\u0433\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [board games], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [crosswords], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [books and magazines]. \u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u043e\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian euphemism for \u201chusband\u201d, lit: my stronger half] is in charge of picking up \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0438\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [wine], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [beer] and anything \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong>\u0433\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [for grilling] for the day after the hurricane.<\/p>\n

Speaking of bath tubs. There are two very similar words in Russian – \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>. \u00a0Careless pronunciation makes them sound almost the same. I know quite a few Russian speakers who use these words interchangeably. But that\u2019s just not right.<\/p>\n

You see, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> means bathtub while \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> is a bathroom (it is actually \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [bath room], but most people shorten it to just \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>):<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430 \u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Our bathroom is very small]<\/p>\n
