Some would say this is a. <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043f\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb <\/strong>[<\/em> <em>sympathetic; cute], or b. <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0448\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [funny], perhaps even c. <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [sentimental], but I would be brave about things and crown it a very certain sign of <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[sediment, deposit; sludge, dreg], which is incidentally my new favorite Russian word!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Isn&#8217;t that so typical, though? Just as I finished blogging about my favorite Russian word (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/what\u2019s-your-favorite-russian-word\/\" target=\"_blank\">remember <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0435\u0441\u044c\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00bb<\/strong>?<\/a>) I meet another Russian word that is even better and I fall in love with it instead and&#8230; yes, I&#8217;ve change my mind! I&#8217;ve picked a new favorite word (and something tells me that this process of falling in love with new Russian words will last eternally&#8230;). I loved all of your favorite words which you mentioned in the comments for the last post &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%95%D0%B6%D0%B8%D0%BA\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0436\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [small hedgehog] has two wonderful sounds: <strong>\u00ab\u0451\u00bb<\/strong> and <strong>\u00ab\u0436\u00bb<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A4%D0%BE%D1%80%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%87%D0%BA%D0%B0\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [\u2018window leaf&#8217;] you&#8217;ll probably use not only in Russian, but also only in Russia, <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0449\u0443\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[feeling, perception; sensation; feel] leaves a soft <em>&#8216;feeling&#8217;<\/em> (get it?) in your mouth, and yes, we should all try to use <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u0441\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> more often. The first time I heard the word <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> was from a friend of mine a couple of days ago when she had been to a restaurant which failed to make an agreeable impression on her and she thus commented it in the following fashion: <strong>\u00ab\u0422\u0430\u043c \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439!\u00bb <\/strong>[which could be translated as something in the manner of <em>&#8220;it&#8217;s really bad there&#8221; <\/em>or <em>&#8220;that place is way behind&#8221;<\/em>]. Clearly my friend wasn&#8217;t talking about <strong>\u00ab\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442 \u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[result of settling] which, for example, one may define as <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0441\u0430\u0434\u043e\u043a, \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0440\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0432\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0438 \u0432 \u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 (\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044f\u044f \u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044c)\u00bb <\/strong>[a residue received as a result of suspension settling (the lower part)]. Thus <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9E%D1%82%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B9\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> means the gross and disgusting last remains left from some kind of fluid on the bottom of jars or pots after some time has passed (depending on the owner of the jars or pots this amount of time can differ from days till years or even decades). Though clearly what she meant was not this sludge, as she used the word in a more <em>\u2018expressionistic&#8217;<\/em> and <em>\u2018figuratively speaking&#8217;<\/em> fashion, so the restaurant neither looked nor smelled nor served food reminding of moldering residues from the bottom of containers. Now I&#8217;m not a native speaker of Russian, but I figured out pretty fast that this word was no compliment, but I couldn&#8217;t grip the whole scope of it, so I asked her to clarify what it meant. She explained it as something that&#8217;s either far behind its own time, or just really bad (in many, many ways). Thus it can describe both the opposite of contemporary and the opposite of good stuff. But how to use <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> in every day speech? You can always try your way around with it, and use it whenever you&#8217;re not content with something, and see when it works and when it&#8217;s not okay.
