It plays with the idea of Russian prefixes and the verb <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0438\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>, which can mean to be in jail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u2013\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0442\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0435 \u0421\u0421\u0421\u0420?<br \/>\n\u2013\u0421\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f, \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f, \u0441\u043e\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440, \u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430.\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\u2013What does USSR stand for?<br \/>\n\u2013Bedroom, dining room, toilet, work.]<\/p>\n<p>My favorite version of this joke has <strong>\u00ab\u0421\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0442\u044c \u0421\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0430 \u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0451\u0442 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [Stalin&#8217;s death will save Russia] as the punch line. There&#8217;s no Malenkov, or Molotov either. Only Mikoyan remains, and he&#8217;s not Russian.]<\/p>\n<p>This is my favorite joke. It&#8217;s from the 1950s, so it plays on the chronic food shortages in the Soviet Union, as well as de-Stalinization. (Malenkov and Molotov were Stalin allies, as was Mikoyan. However, Mikoyan fared better under de-Stalinization because he backed Khrushchev&#8217;s efforts.
