I apologize for that, but I do have a great <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [excuse]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0414<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [The case is] that I had <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [a surgery]. As far as surgeries go, it was a minor one. Still, I am still bed-ridden.<\/p>\n<p>Since I\u2019ve been busy recovering for the last few days, today\u2019s post is all about <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">a<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [surgery] and related things.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> itself. Its most general meaning is \u201coperation\u201d. So it can cover surgeries, police actions, military deployments, and bank transactions among its many meanings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u041f\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0443 \u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0441\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>[Patient requires immediate surgery] &#8211; this is not something you want to hear from your doctor. Thankfully, my surgery was\u00a0<strong>\u00ab\u0437\u0430\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[planned, scheduled] one although I was given just a couple of days to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, unlike the other types of operations, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [surgical operation] will be done by <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [a surgeon] in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[an operating room].<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041f\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [patient] will be given some sort of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [anesthesia]. A more commonly used word for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u00bb<\/strong>. It means the same thing, anesthesia, but shares the root with the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [narcotic]. The specialist who administers anesthesia is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0437\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [anesthesiologist]. Interestingly, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> is a specialist who treats drug addictions.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this was my first surgery ever and I was thrilled to learn that I\u2019d be getting <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0449\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u00bb<\/strong> [general anesthesia] that would carry me through the entire procedure. I was, however, surprised to learn that it would be <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043c\u0431\u0443\u043b\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [out-patient surgery] which meant I\u2019d be sent home that very same day. \u00a0I sort of counted on this being <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [in-patient surgery] requiring a short stay at a hospital under constant care of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0444\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0441\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [qualified medical personnel].<\/p>\n<p>As such, I was released home the same day. Luckily, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [my parents] were able to help. Actually, my mom helped and my dad mostly entertained me with stories of how he survived <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0434\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043f\u043f\u0435\u043d\u0434\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [appendectomy surgery] while <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [under local anesthesia].<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an interesting medical trivia for you &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0435\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434 <\/strong><strong>\u0420\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Leonid Rogozov] was the man who performed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonid_Rogozov\">emergency appendectomy<\/a> on himself in 1961. Reading Rogozov&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/corpus.leeds.ac.uk\/serge\/rogozov-1964.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">own account<\/a> of the procedure made me feel like a total wimp.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if for some reason you end up having a surgery in a Russian hospital, there are a few words and phrases that you will need, such as<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0423 \u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> \u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442&#8230;\u00bb<\/strong> [My \u2026. hurts] &#8211; insert the applicable body part, always keeping it in nominative &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [my head hurts], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [my stomach hurts], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [my heart hurts].<\/p>\n<p>In case you forget the Russian word for a particular body part, you can always use the universal <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [here] and a pointing gesture &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [it hurts here].<\/p>\n<p>If it hurts when you try to do something, the phrase is<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e &#8230;\u00bb<\/strong> [It hurts to\u2026] then add infinitive of the verb as in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u044b\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [it hurts to breath], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043b\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [it hurts to swallow], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [it hurts to stand].<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, I am not allergic to any drugs.
