Both good and bad, I&#8217;m afraid) people. I try to live my life according to the second way, even though I know all is not as well as we wished it to be here, and that many things have changed since I arrived (for the worse), but my reality here is not as gruesome as what one might see on TV. Often I try not to take things that I read too <strong>\u00ab\u0431\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u043e \u043a \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0443\u00bb <\/strong>[\u2018close to heart&#8217;], but it&#8217;s not always possible. <em>My Russia<\/em> is the best country in the world &#8211; but I am aware that my Russia is not everybody&#8217;s Russian Federation. Early this morning, while I was browsing through <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rusrep.ru\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u0420<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/a> <\/strong>as I always do, I came across a title of a story that read <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rusrep.ru\/news\/2009\/01\/19\/kungaevi\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u0421\u0440\u0435\u0434\u044c \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/a> [<\/strong><em>adv.<\/em> in broad daylight, in open daylight]. I noticed it first because I know it&#8217;s a phraseology that&#8217;s always puzzled me (it should be <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0438 \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018in the middle of a white day&#8217;] for it to be a grammatically correct sentence, now shouldn&#8217;t it?), but as I read it I was no longer puzzled at all over any grammatical constructions whatsoever. The story shocked me, and I can&#8217;t even explain why I was so shocked this time, when it&#8217;s not the first time. I was really shocked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.novayagazeta.ru\/data\/2008\/89\/35.html\" target=\"_self\">when Anna Politovskaya was murdered in October 2006<\/a> (I&#8217;ve read all of her books; for Christmas 2005 my mother got me a Swedish translation of her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Putin%27s_Russia\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Putin&#8217;s Russia&#8221;<\/a>), which was one of those \u2018coming-of-age&#8217; moments for me. But this &#8211; a lawyer pushing for the re-opening of a case that should&#8217;ve given the guilty prison for life is walking down the street after a press conference with a young female journalist (she was still just a student!) in the middle of the day in Moscow and are gunned down. And nobody sees anything! Markelov died immediately; the girl earlier this morning in the hospital after an operation that failed to saver her life.
