I am back, \u00ab\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0435 \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [dear readers], ready to explain obscure points of Russian grammar to you. What have I been doing in the past weeks? Many things, all of which relate to school. I am writing \u00ab\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [a thesis] on a famous Soviet leader and just generally studying for exams (I just took three exams in a week-and-a-half span). Today, I am ready to teach you about a group of Russian verbs that are all translated into English as “to unite”. How do they differ? Read on!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In my Russian class, we have to report on the news every day (\u00ab\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e, \u043f\u043e-\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [of course, in Russian]). Today I reported that \u00ab\u0415\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u043e\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [the Eurasian Economic Community] discussed \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u041a\u0438\u0440\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0438 \u043a \u0442\u0430\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0443 \u0441\u043e\u044e<\/span>\u0437\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [Kyrgyzstan’s joining the customs union]. The word \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> made me think. It comes from the verb \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>, which is often translated as “to unite”. But so are the verbs \u00ab\u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>. I have never been clear how to use these three verb pairs, so I said to my professor: \u00ab\u0421\u0443\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u0435\u0442 \u043b\u0438 \u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430 \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0443 \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043c\u0438 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438?\u00bb<\/strong> [Is there a difference between these words?] He answered: \u00ab\u041a\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [Of course] and proceeded to explain.<\/p>\n

The verb pair \u00ab\u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> refers to a few things (states, political parties, etc.) all coming together at once. So, in reference to that customs union Kyrgyzstan wants to join, you could say: \u00ab\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f, \u0411\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f \u0438 \u041a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u0445\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d \u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan united]. Or like this strange headline<\/a> from 23 August of this year says: \u00ab”\u0421\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0435\u0434\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f” \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u041a\u041f\u0420\u0424 \u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [A Just Russia (a political party)<\/em> has proposed to KPRF (Communist Party of the Russian Federation)<\/em> that they unite in the elections].<\/p>\n

Let’s say that A Just Russia did<\/em> unite with the communists and that after this union, suddenly \u00ab\u041f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0435 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [Right Cause] wanted to join, too. Then we would say that \u00ab\u041f\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u044f “\u041f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0435 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e” \u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a \u0433\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u043f\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [The party “Right Cause” wants to join the group]. If there is an already-existing union, then you use \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>. It might make more sense to think about this verb pair as meaning “to join”.<\/p>\n

The verb pair \u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> simply means “to unite” and is the most neutral. When I search it on Google (Google can be a great language learning tool, my friends), I see it often used in relation with technology, such as: \u00ab\u041d\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span> \u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0441 \u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [I can’t connect to the server].<\/p>\n
