It was absolutely fascinating, mostly because I remember nothing of my own first-hand experience of being <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [on an operating table] when I had a surgery. Which, I guess, is really a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>So first, we were shown into the pre-op area. In case you ever have to translate \u201cpre-op area\u201d to a Russian patient, it\u2019s called <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u044b, <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0449\u0435\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0433\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0443\u00bb<\/strong>. That\u2019s a mouthful! \u201cPost-op\u201d would then be <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u044b, \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0449\u0435\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0435\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0442\u0435\u0440\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044e\u00bb<\/strong>. In case you don\u2019t want to memorize all this, the short-cut would be to call the former area <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a pre-op room] and the later &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0435\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a post-op room].<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s in pre-op that <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u0446\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0433\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043b\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [patient gets ready for the surgery]. His <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u044f\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [vital signs] are taken, including <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [pulse], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430\u0432\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [blood pressure], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441\u044b\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0438\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [blood oxygen level]. Adult patients are also started on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [IV drip]. But that all happens after the patients are changed into funny-looking <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043f\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [here: medical gowns with ties in the back].<\/p>\n<p>Then a man or a woman of the hour appears. I\u2019m not talking about <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [surgeon]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u042f <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0438\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0437\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [I mean an anesthesiologist (appears)]. And you have a nice chat in the course of which the anesthesiologist figures out how to make sure you won\u2019t remember a single thing about your procedure. After all the pre-op work is done, the patient is moved to the surgery on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a gurney].<\/p>\n<p>On a tour we visited 5 rooms set up for 5 different procedures. First up was <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0440\u043e-<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [neuro surgery room] set up for removing <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043b\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0433\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a brain tumor]. Kids (I guess I should\u2019ve mentioned, this was a tour for children) could even try to hold a drill that surgeons use to, well, drill through the skull bones.<\/p>\n<p>All <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [surgical instruments] were laid out as they would for a real <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [surgery]. And we could touch all of them except, of course, for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043f\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [scalpels]. We were explained that since <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [surgeon] doesn\u2019t look at the instruments, but instead calls for the ones he needs, his <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [assistant] must know and quickly recall the names of every single instrument in the surgery, including all the <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0448\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [retractors], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0449\u0438\u043f\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [graspers], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [clamps] and various <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043b\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [surgical needles].<\/p>\n<p>The next room was set up for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [heart surgeries], specifically for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0448\u0443\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a coronary artery bypass]. Notice, how in the Russian name for the procedure the word <strong>&#8220;\u0448\u0443\u043d\u0442&#8221;<\/strong> is used to describe the \u201cbypass\u201d part . Maybe that\u2019s why I never stopped to think what is being \u201cbypassed\u201d and how. Turns out, since a patient\u2019s heart has to be stopped for at least an hour, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> is maintained with <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u043f\u043f\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [a blood circulation machine] to which the patient\u2019s blood is redirected. The technician operating this machine is called <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0444\u0443\u0437\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [perfusionist].<\/p>\n<p>One thing that I learned in this room was that throughout the surgery nurses keep count of everything being used, from instruments to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0430\u043b\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [surgical drapes]. This way, they know if something is left inside the patient. Each of the drapes has a single bluish thread in it that shows on <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [X-ray] if it does get left behind after all.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think this whole business of opening <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a rib cage], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [stopping the heart] and such sounds a bit grim. Well, I thought it was pretty awesome. What really gave me a shudder was the next room for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [bone surgery]. It was set up for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0443\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a knee replacement surgery]. Maybe it was the fact that it finally dawned on me that \u201creplacement\u201d here is not a real joint, but a titanium one which looked pretty scary. Or it might had been the nurse mentioning just how messy bone surgeries could get. Whatever it was, I was glad to be out of that room.<\/p>\n<p>The last surgical room was that for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u041e\u0420-<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [ENT surgery]. Now, Russians have three ways to say \u201cENT doctor\u201d and all three are commonly used &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0445\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0440\u043b\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [lit: ear-throat-nose], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u041e\u0420\u00bb<\/strong> [an abbreviation for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0430\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb <\/strong>which means that same, only in Greek], and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> (which is an easier to pronounce and is not abbreviated).<\/p>\n<p>So the room was set up for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0434\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [tonsillectomy]. It was ok, if a bit less exciting than the previous rooms. But it had all those interesting tools for reaching deep into one\u2019s nose. Made me think of the old movie <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u0451\u00bb<\/strong> [Total Recall].<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the coolest room was saved for last. It wasn\u2019t set up for any particular surgery though. Instead, there was a sign on the door reading <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0420\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0442\u0438\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Robotic Surgery] and the kids speculated whether they would see a surgery done by a robot or done on a robot. Of course, it was the former.
