Stuck in traffic on I-95 a couple of days ago, I thought of a post full of Russian words that can be used \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f\u043c <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [workdays and holidays].<\/p>\n

First, I have a confession to make – as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [a driver], I am in the category that subscribes to the philosophy of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u0435 <\/strong>\u0435<\/span><\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u0448\u044c, <\/strong>\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0448\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [slow but steady wins the race]. Not to say I don\u2019t go above the posted \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [speed limit] once in a while. But even when I do \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0432\u044b\u0448\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [exceed the speed limit], it\u2019s by no more than 5 miles per hour.<\/p>\n

I also prefer \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [local roads] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441 <\/strong>\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [scenic routes] to \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [highway] even if it takes me three times as long to reach my destination.<\/p>\n

Speaking of the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>, I do know that it has nothing to do with the Russian word \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to suffer], but that\u2019s exactly how I feel whenever I have to drive on one.<\/p>\n

Driving on \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0435 <\/strong>\u0448\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [highway] is incredibly \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [boring]. To borrow a line from a classic, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435 <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438 <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [all good roads are good in the same way]. And truth be told, most roads in the US are pretty good \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [compared to] Russian roads. After all, as another classic allegedly pointed out, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044b<\/span> – <\/strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Russia has two misfortunes – fools and roads].<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not even that roads here in the US are \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [smooth] and mostly \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [free of potholes], but that they are clearly marked with various helpful \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [traffic signs] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0443\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [direction signs, route markers].<\/p>\n

When I first learned how to drive at age 20, I was terrified of highways. But my Dad, whom I trust a lot in all things driving-related, told me that driving on a highway was much easier than on local roads. As he said, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u0434\u0443\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043a <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 <\/strong>\u0435<\/span><\/strong>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0443 <\/strong>\u0448\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [any fool can drive on a highway].<\/p>\n

I remember his words every time someone \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to cut off] in front of me, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong>\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u0430 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0440\u044f\u0434 <\/strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [change lanes without a blinker], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0440\u044f\u0434 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u043c <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [to take the left lane when there\u2019s room in the right one], etc. I, myself, never do such deplorable things (at least not to my knowledge).<\/p>\n

Driving on a highway in the US can get monotonous for sure. Plentiful and well-marked \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [gas stations] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [fast-food restaurants] ensure that neither you nor your \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [informal: a car] run out of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0433\u043e\u0440\u044e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [fuel]. And even if it does, a quick call gets you \u00ab<\/strong>\u044d\u0432\u0430\u043a\u0443\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [a tow truck] or a helpful \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [police officer].<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u043b\u043e\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u043e<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [rest areas] appear regularly every few dozen miles, complete with \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0443\u0430\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [restrooms], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [vending machines] selling \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [snacks and drinks], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [road maps], and helpful info about local \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [points of interest, attractions] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [hotels].<\/p>\n

But there is a dark side to this \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0439 <\/strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u043c\u043e\u0431\u0438\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [driver\u2019s heaven] and it\u2019s called \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [traffic]. I drove on I-95 between New York and Florida too many times to count, but not once without getting stuck in traffic.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever been stuck in traffic, you know there are two kinds. One is the slow-crawling caused by \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [congestion], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u043a <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u043b\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [approaching a toll plaza] or, say, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438, <\/strong>\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0449\u0430\u0449\u0438\u0435\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e-<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0441\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [drivers rubber-necking at an accident]. The other one is stand-still traffic due to \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0435\u0440\u044c\u0451<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0441\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a major accident], usually resulting in \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0441 <\/strong>\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [lane closures].<\/p>\n

In this case, I try to find the nearest \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u044a\u0435\u0437\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [exit], preferably the one close to \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [caf\u00e9], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0446\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [shopping mall] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/span>–<\/strong>\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [something interesting]. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0435\u043c <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0435, <\/strong>\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0448\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Sitting at a caf\u00e9 is better than standing in traffic].<\/p>\n

I am one of those drivers who love commenting on others\u2019 behavior on the road. I know, it\u2019s a terribly annoying habit. But at least I am not prone to \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [road rage].<\/p>\n

And speaking of driving and not driving, I found it interesting that there\u2019s still no simple way of translating \u201cdesignated driver\u201d into Russian. It\u2019s not a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> which is more like an on-call driver. It is not a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> which is a commercial \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443\u0441\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [service] where a professional driver will drive you in your car to your house if you are \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0448\u043e\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [informal: tipsy, under influence].<\/p>\n

So in case you need to explain what \u201cdesignated driver\u201d is in Russian, you can always just say \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438, <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u044c\u0451\u0442 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0442 <\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0445 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0438\u0432\u0448\u0438\u0445 <\/strong>\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0432\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [a person in a group who doesn\u2019t drink and drives all his friends home after the party is over].<\/p>\n
