For a while, the weather was quite warm, but recently, whenever I walk outside, <strong>\u00ab\u043c\u043d\u0435 \u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [I am cold]. This means I have to wear my <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>, \u0441\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>, \u0438 \u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [coat, boots, and hat]. And I try not to forget <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [gloves] either! In the photo: birches near Novosibirsk in autumn. Do you know how to say &#8220;birch&#8221; in Russian?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The learning verbs in Russian are very, very complicated. I&#8217;m in an advanced Russian class and we just went over them, so I thought I would post a little bit about these verbs, including some example sentences, so you can see how they are used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0423\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> means to learn and is usually used with general knowledge, such as <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043f\u0438\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to learn to write] or <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [to learn music]. If you learn from someone specific, use <strong>\u00ab\u0443 \u043a\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, such as <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0442\u0435\u0440\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044e \u0443 \u043e\u0442\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [I learned patience from my father]. This is the verb you usually use when saying that you study at school or university: <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0432 \u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [I study at university]. You can also be more specific and say <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0432 \u041c\u0413\u0423\u00bb<\/strong> [I study at MGU <em>(Moscow State University)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, if you want to say that you study something specific, one of the verbs you can use is <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>. You usually use a specific field with <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>, such as: <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044e, \u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043a, \u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u043a\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [history, English language, physics]. The imperfective of this verb is <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> and has a slightly different meaning: it means that you have mastered whatever it is that you are studying, whereas <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> does not imply that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0417\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> is sort of like <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> in that you can use it to say that you study a certain field, but it is not always used in the same way. When people ask me what I study at university, they can say: <strong>\u00ab\u0427\u0435\u043c \u0442\u044b \u0437\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430\u0435\u0448\u044c\u0441\u044f?\u00bb<\/strong> [What do you study?] and I answer: <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0437\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430\u044e\u0441\u044c \u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0435\u0439 \u0438 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [I study history and Russian language]. <strong>\u00ab\u0417\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> can also be used in more of a general study sense, such as: <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0437\u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430\u044e\u0441\u044c \u043e\u0431\u044b\u0447\u043d\u043e \u0434\u043e\u043c\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [I usually study at home].<\/p>\n<p>I hope this provides somewhat of an introduction to the learning verbs.
