It\u2019s all about getting ready for <strong>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0413\u043e\u0434<\/strong> (the New Year), <strong>\u043c\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (my favorite holiday).<\/p>\n<p>At first I wasn\u2019t going to write about <strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0413<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430<\/strong> (celebrating the New Year) since we already covered it on this blog several times. We wrote about some of the <strong>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438*<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%D0%A1-%D0%9D%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%8B%D0%BC-2008-%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BC-happy-new-year\/\">New Year customs<\/a>) associated with this <strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (holiday) as well as some <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%C2%AB%D0%98%D1%81%D0%BA%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B2%D0%BE-%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C-%D0%B8-%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%BB%D1%83%D1%87%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C%C2%BB-the-art-of-giving-and-recie\/\">useful Russian phrases<\/a> for gift-giving and receiving. And last year we explained how to celebrate a truly <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/are-you-ready-for-the-new-year\/\">Russian New Year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s left to talk about then? Quite a few things, as it turns out. For example, we never really concentrated on <strong>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f\u044f <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (the New Year tree). The other day I was asked a question about traditional Russian tree decorations. And since I am going to buy my tree later today, that\u2019s what the post is about.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, we would go <strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (buy a fir tree) just a couple of days before the holiday and decorated it either on December 30<sup>th<\/sup> or 31<sup>st<\/sup>. Most of my friends and neighbors did the same thing. It was rather <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e<\/strong> (uncommon) to put up a tree a week or more before the holiday. Personally, I think it kept up <strong>\u043e\u0449\u0443\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a sense of celebration) since <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (there was not enough time to get used to the fir tree).<\/p>\n<p>Once the tree was installed in its <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (stand), first up went <strong>\u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u0440\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u044b <\/strong>(string lights). This was also the most frustrating part of the process since all the wires <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c<\/strong> (would get tangled up). Besides, <strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043f\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0443, <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (there was always at least one light bulb that needed to be replaced).<\/p>\n<p>Next we would get our most treasured <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (ornaments) out, including <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0448\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (glass orbs), usually <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (red with a pattern of white); <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (glass pinecones);\u00a0<strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0441\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (glass icicles);\u00a0<strong>\u0444\u0438\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0441\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (blown-glass ornaments in the shapes of fairy tale creatures).<\/p>\n<p>As with many other things, our ornaments were much the same as the ones on our friends\u2019 trees or other trees around the country since they were all made on the same <strong>\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0401<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043b\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> (\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/yolochka.ru\/company\/\">Yolochka<\/a>\u201d, the Russian ornaments\u2019 factory). The factory, by the way, is still open and is cranking out new ornaments.<\/p>\n<p>After the fancy glass ornaments that families <strong>\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0443 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (saved as the apple of one\u2019s eye) and <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (passed from generation to generation), it was the turn of the simple <strong>\u0441\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (hand-made ornaments). Various <strong>\u0444\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (lanterns), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (tiny boxes), <strong>\u0431\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043f\u0438<\/strong> (paper chains), and such were made out of <strong>\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (cardboard), <strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0442\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/strong> (colored paper), and <strong>\u0444\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (foil). Sometimes we would get a chance to make an ornament out of an egg by making the holes in it, blowing the egg white and yolk out, and then decorating the whole egg shell.<\/p>\n<p>After that it was time to decorate with <strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044b<\/strong> (strings of beads) and <strong>\u0433\u0438\u0440\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u044b <\/strong>(garlands) that weren\u2019t <strong>\u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0438\u0440\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u044b<\/strong> (string lights), but made out of <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (glass beads). Then the tree topper, <strong>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, would be placed on top of the tree by an adult and kids would take handfuls of <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0438\u043a<\/strong> and <strong>\u043c\u0438\u0448\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (tinsel) and hang all around the tree. In the end, the tree would be so covered in the shroud of tinsel that it was hard to see its branches.<\/p>\n<p>The final touch was to wrap a white bed sheet around the tree stand and place <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0414\u0435\u0434 <\/strong><strong>\u041c\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437<\/strong> (plastic Father Frost) under the tree.<\/p>\n<p>Do you celebrate New Year?
