Better cancel them and instead celebrate <strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0434<\/strong> (the old New Year).<\/p>\n<p>Today, January the 13<sup>th<\/sup> is yet another the New Year\u2019s Eve. Yes, it\u2019s another chance to finish last year\u2019s unfinished business, to set goals and make promises, and to start afresh. Yes, lucky Russians get to celebrate the New Year not once, but twice.<\/p>\n<p>Russia was 300-odd years late switching to Gregorian calendar. <strong>\u0421\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0448\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043b\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438\u0448\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0432 1918 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong> (the country moved to the new style calendar only in 1918). Before then it was using two calendars. For all matters external, such as diplomatic relations and international trade, <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c<\/strong> (Gregorian calendar) had to be used since that\u2019s what the rest of Europe was using. Internally, however, <strong>\u044e\u043b\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c<\/strong> (Julian calendar) was used.<\/p>\n<p>It sure was odd and inconvenient, but not without some excitement, I imagine. Crossing the Russian border was a real time-travel experience. The 9-hour time difference between New York and Moscow nowadays is nothing compared to a 14-day difference less than a hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the Russian Orthodox Church still uses Julian calendar. Which is why Russian Christmas is celebrated on January 7<sup>th<\/sup> aka December 25<sup>th<\/sup> <strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044e<\/strong> (according to the old style calendar).<\/p>\n<p>The old New Year is celebrated, but in a muted way. It is not an official holiday and, unless it falls on <strong>\u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (weekend), it remains <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong>(a work day). It is not a holiday for raucous parties, fireworks or Presidential addresses to the masses. Instead, it is celebrated with the family and close friends.<\/p>\n<p>For TV stations this is another chance to air <strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043c\u044b<\/strong> (good old movies), such as <strong>\u041a\u0430\u0440\u043d\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u043e\u0447\u044c<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/g_m017ebtD8\">Carnival Night<\/a>, with English subtitles), <strong>\u0427\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0438<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/6odB6-YFS_M\">Wizards<\/a>, no English subtitles), <strong>\u0418\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0443\u0434\u044c\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (Irony of Fate) and <strong>\u0421\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0434 <\/strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OCQQMhtOITM\">Old New Year<\/a>, no English subtitles).<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if you are comfortable watching <em>Irony of Fate<\/em> without English subtitles and you like this movie, you will really like the <em>Old New Year<\/em> one. Filmed in 1980, it has wonderful actors playing out a story that, as strange as it might sound, is immediately recognizable to Russian viewers (much like the <em>Irony of Fate<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p>Two families that, it seems, can\u2019t be more different from each other, have something unexpected in common. Their meeting and bonding is both accidental and inevitable as they celebrate the old New Year each in their own way.<\/p>\n<p>The movie has too many <strong>\u043a\u0440\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u044b<\/strong> (catch phrases) to list them all, but some of the more memorable ones include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0412\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e. <\/strong><strong>\u0422\u044b \u043d\u0435 \u0432 \u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435.<\/strong> (Behave properly. The \u201cblue light\u201d refers to the flicker of blue TV screens.
